During Holy week, a friend I had not seen for a while dropped by from church. Doing double duty as a sitter and an old lady, I don't make it to church services in person so much as I would like. We get the church service on line.
But one of the ladies I used to do altar service with stopped by and she gave me this rose.
An unexpected gift from a good friend is special. It may not be from my garden or the FIRST rose of spring, but I love it. Thank you for sharing this with me.
This is the last photo I am posting until I can come back after eye surgery.
For those who don't know, I will not be on Flickr from April 4 - 6. Hope to be able to be back again on the 7th. Thank you all for your messages of love and your prayers.

** I posted this notice on my last image but just as a REMINDER:

Thursday, April 4th I will be having cataract surgery on my right eye. Because of that I will not be here April 4th, 5th and possible the 6th.
My aftercare instructions take up two typed pages. I cannot read, use the computer (AT ALL), bend over, go into highly lit rooms or sunlight, or lift. This is to assure that the pressure in the eye does not stress the tiny sutures used to attach the new lense to the inside of my eye.
I ask for your prayers that this op goes well and that there are no complcations. I pray for all those who are having the same operation or have had. {PLEASE NO horror stories of what went wrong}. I want to keep a positive outlook (no pun intended) and to strenfgthen my faith that Lord always does what we ask of Him in Jesus name. Thank you for visiting and for praying and for being friends. May the love of the Lord and His Peace and Mercy surround you always. God bless and keep you, JJ

During this Lenten season, Christians prepare for the MAIN EVENT. The event that actually makes it possible for us to be called Christians, Saved, Redeemed, Made Right with the Lord.
We are NO better than other human beings. We sin, even though we try try to be like Jesus and we fail to do what is right, even though we want to.
THERE IS ONE important difference between Christians and anyone else, that being in the person of Jesus Christ, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Savior, Redeemer, the Alpha and the Omega.
When He sacrificed Himself on the Cross, He took our sins, (past, present and future) with Him. He passed through hell and let the evil one know that HE HAD CONQUERED SIN, DEATH AND THE GRAVE. He rose again from the dead and is now living in Heaven with God the Father, God the Holy Spirit and Jesus, the Son of God. Three in one, one in three. (another great mystery we accept with faith).
Even though we sin, when we repent of our sins and sincerely try to live our lives as Jesus did, believing in Him and loving Him with all of our hearts, minds and bodies, He rescues us.
It is hard for many to believe that this one person, both GOD and MAN could accomplish this without His Children having to DO SOMETHING to earn His love. NOTHING we do, no matter how wonderful, good, loving, kind and righteous would ever be seen as good or righteous by the Lord God, WITHOUT Jesus.
He washes away the stains we leave, He saves us. We cannot earn it. We cannot pay for it. It is a FREE GIFT OF LOVE from our Loving Father God to His creations. No matter what happens in our lives, Jesus will always be there, waiting patiently, for sinners to come to Him, with a humble heart in faith believing to receive the PEACE that ONLY HE can offer. The peace that is beyond human understanding. The Love of the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit, a triune Redemptor, who CAN DO much more than we could ever imagine!
With this comforing knowledge of eternal life with Jesus, we CAN Dare to Dream!
My prayers for you while dreaming of the day when we will walk and talk with our Lord in person. THAT WILL be the best day of the rest of our eternal lives! God bless and keep you, during Lent, Easter and Passover! JJ

Mount Rushmore State Park, the Presidents' heads carved into granite. I made the mountains foreground and sky in Bryce and added the faces ONLY from a photo. I blended this altogether in Photoshop. The picture I used is the first one in the comments.
Why not just Photoshop the photo of Mt. Rushmore? Because like the mountain they are carved on IT WAS THERE!. Happy Presidents' Day. God bless America!

Interesting & Fun Facts About Mt. Rushmore
•Gutzon Borglum, the prime sculptor to be assigned the task, was 60 years old when he began working on the monument.
•The mountain is named after a New York City Attorney, Charles E. Rushmore, who enquired about the mountain's name during a business trip in 1885. A miner working on the spot responded with a smarmy remark and in 1930, the mountain was officially recognized by this name.
•Mount Rushmore project was undertaken since it was Gutzon Borglum’s desire to commemorate the ideals of the four major presidents of United States and pay tribute to their immense contribution for the nation’s well being. In his own words, they were chosen because they "commemorate the founding, growth, preservation, and development to the United States."
•Keeping this factor in mind, George Washington was picked since he was the one to bring in the concept of a democratic nation; Thomas Jefferson since he authored the Declaration of Independence; Abraham Lincoln for putting an end to the American slave culture and Theodore Roosevelt for his honest endeavor for the causes of conservation and business.
•The structure was originally intended to only have George Washington, but after the commission was authorized by Congress in 1925, President Coolidge insisted that a Democrat and two Republicans be portrayed as well.
•Initially, Thomas Jefferson’s portrait was to be carved on the right of George Washington. After 18 months the workers realized that it was not working. Then, Jefferson’s face was dynamited off and carved on the other side.
•The granite faces on Mount Rushmore tower over 5,500 feet above sea level.
•Each President's head is as tall as a six-story building and the carvings are scaled to men who would stand 465 feet tall.
•The presidents’ noses are 20 feet long, their mouths 18 feet wide, and their eyes are about 11 feet across.
•Over 800 million pounds of stone was removed from Mount Rushmore during the construction.
•Each day, the workers had to climb 506 steps to reach the top of Mount Rushmore.
•The entire monument cost $989,992.32 to build.
•Mount Rushmore took around 14 years to be completed.
•Except for a few minor injuries, no incident of death was reported during the entire period of carving.
•There is a cave behind the carving called the "Hall of Records." It was intended to house the story of Mount Rushmore but was never completed due to lack of funding.

So many things to do before Christmas. Last minute presents to buy, food to prepare, plans to be firmed up. PLEASE do not forget the MOST important thing of all, is to count the blessings you have NOW. Before you open up the presents under the tree, before eating a sumptuous feast, or indulging in your favorite dessert. Remember WHY we even have this holiday. The actual date of Jesus' birth is in dispute. The 25th of December has been the traditional day chosen long ago to celebrate His wondrous birth. Whether he was born on that day or any other, the fact remains HE WAS BORN! A gift to us from GOD!
God gave us a Savior "at just the right time".
Now we can go to our Father in prayer and request any good thing with confidence that we will be answered. Also, in our faith we become righteous before the Lord. THAT is the GREATEST blessing of all.
May you know the Peace of the Lord that is beyond human understanding and have a TRULY BLESSED CHRISTMAS! Thank you for stopping by. JJ:)

Remember when you were young and you picked up a snoglobe and shook it for the first time? This is what I think little ones see when they see the snow flying all over as if the little glass ball came magically to life.
Hope you enjoy this as much as Zoe enjoyed her first snoglobe. It is made of a hard plastic these days so it doesn't break. She watches it for a long time and I can only imagine the dreams she has when she sees the snow swooshing round and round.

The Christmas Tree, Lights, traditional colors of red and green and why Christians use them at Yule time:

The true origin of the Christmas Tree is a mystery, judging from the many, many theories, ranging from the Druids to one of England's 19th century kings. This much is certain: the evergreen is an ancient symbol of eternal life, which we have through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. God created the evergreens, and we don't mind reclaiming this symbol from pagans if need be. Tradtionally, the Christmas tree has a star on top. When we look at a Christmas Tree, we are reminded of the eternal life we will enjoy in the presence of Christ.

Christmas lights are another symbol that come from pagan origins, but were created by God. Lights signify hope, happiness and safety. They represent the fact that Jesus is the Light of the World in the midst of profound darkness. When we see Christmas lights on buildings and Christmas trees, and lit candles, we're reminded of Jesus, the Light of the World.

Red traditionally represents the sacrifice of blood that Jesus shed while hanging on the cross. Green represents the evergreen, ie. eternal life. Holly is included with the evergreens, and even had special significance because of the red berries it has. At one time holly was considered a holy plant: green for eternal life, and red for the blood of Christ. We believe in the meaning of these symbols.

A Bryce tribute to the "49'ers Gold Rush days. When city slickers went into the badlands to find their treasure in the Black Hills of the Dakotas to the Mountains in California and everywhere in between.
They were dangerous days and many men lost their lives trying to find and keep their gold. Some made fortunes and took them back east.
Others were buried on the land they staked out for mining for gold.

Why the 1849 Gold Rush Was Important to the Development of the West

The discovery of gold in California and Nevada sparked a rush of miners to join the Gold Rush of 1849 looking to make their fortune mining for a share of the gold. Each new discovery drew thousands more. The gold mining equipment was easily moved from location to location as miners hoped to strike it rich. These miners were known as the "49ers".

The discovery of gold in January 24, 1848 that caused the beginning of the gold rush in California was made by James W. Marshall, a carpenter. He discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in the Sacramento Valley. This lead to miners from as far away as China, Australia and Europe. In the first three years, 820 tons of gold was mined in the California area.

According to Nevada history records, Abner Blackburn was traveling to California through northwest Nevada in 1849 when he discovered gold near the Carson River and a ravine that later became called Gold Canyon. This finding inspired California miners to travel over the Sierra to try their luck. Starting in 1850 large deposits of gold was mined in Gold Canyon.

Because of the thousands that came west to California and Nevada searching for gold, small towns sprang up near the mining operations. There were entrepreneurs who set up shop to service the miners' everyday needs for food, clothing and mining supplies. These settlements lead the way for the west being opened for future development. Settlements were growing with each new discovery of veins of gold in the Sierras. Gold was the catalyst that started the migration to the west. By 1850, California alone had 96,000 people in population.

The gold rush lasted for approximately ten years, until the areas began to show signs of depletion of gold ore. The people who came to try their luck decided to stay in the areas and work at developing the land. Many were nationalities who first came hoping to cash in on the gold rush. The openness of the land helped build a tolerance for the different beliefs and cultures by having more space between neighbors compared to the eastern populated cities. They were more accepted in the west. Because of the high interest shown in the 1849 Gold Rush, people migrated to California and Nevada in larger numbers than would have happened otherwise.

WHITE SNOWY CHRISTMAS

Some folks don't have to dream of a white Christmas, in fact they may be wishing it was NOT quite so white. While it looks lovely in photos or you are retired and living in the woods with plenty of supplies, you probably are not thrilled with snow after the 3rd snowfall.
Lugging it off your driveway only to see the plow push it all back again is frustrating. This is the time to put away your inhibitions and slide on the snowbank!
When kids see snow, *especially in Arizona,* they gaze in wonderment. Every year a "first" snowfall happens and the kids go to the windows with yells of delight. "It's snowing out" echoes throughout homes all over the world.
Please enjoy this slider created as if through the eyes of a child. With lots of Christmas memories to take along for the sleigh ride. HAPPY YULETIDE. JJ
