Loro Parque (Spanish for "parrot park") is a 13.5-hectare zoo located on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, Spain where it houses an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species. The park was initially conceived as a paradise for parrots and has developed over the years into one of the biggest attractions of the Canary Islands, with over 40 million visitors so far. Mount Teide (Spanish: Pico del Teide) is a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Its 3,718 metre high summit is the highest point in Spain, the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic, and it is the third highest volcano in the world measured from its base on the ocean floor. It remains active, with its most recent eruption occurring in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the north western Santiago rift. Teide together with its neighbour Pico Viejo and Montaña Blanca form the Central Volcanic Complex of Tenerife. (from wikipedia)

The leprosy station

Leprosy once was considered a major disease on the island. A leprosy station was first built in the north of the island, where most of the local population lived. The bodies were thrown in the sea outside Santa Cruz until a crematorium was built. In 1943 a whole leprosy village was built on the hill above Abades, including an hospital, a crematorium, many bungalows, an administration’s building facing the sea, and the big concrete church, in typical Franco’s style with a huge cross on the top, that everyone can spot from the motorway. The project was never finished as leprosy was almost eradicated from the Canary Islands as advancements in medical treatments became available at the same time. The leprosy station became a military training facility but the whole place was sold to an Italian in 2002. The church is still in an excellent state. (from wikipedia.org)

Garachico - El Caletón

The Caletón is a bathing area, made up of natural pools, located in the municipality of Garachico on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Beside the pools is the Castle of San Miguel.
The pools were originated by lava from the eruption of the volcano Trevejo in 1706. Upon contact with seawater solidified lava, resulting in whimsical and beautiful shapes.
