Guanella Pass

Thad Roan - Bridgepix posted a photo:

Guanella Pass (el. 3557 m./11,669 ft.) is a high mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado, US.

The pass is located in southwestern Clear Creek County, in the Front Range west of Denver and south of Georgetown. The pass was named for Byron Guanella in 1953. Guanella was a road supervisor and commissioner in Clear Creek County for nearly 50 years.

The pass provides a route between Georgetown in the valley of Clear Creek to the north and Grant in the valley of Geneva Creek, a tributary of the North Fork South Platte River, to the south. The pass is traversed by the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway. The road normally provided a link between Interstate 70 to the north and U.S. Highway 285 to the south, but after Aug. 21, 2009 an unstable hillside closed the road to through access just below the Cabin Creek Campground This closure has since been cleared and the pass is fully available to traffic. As of 09/03/2011 the Georgetown access to the pass is open through the pass and the road, drainage, slide security and accident prevention measures are completed.

The entire route is suitable for passenger cars. Expect heavy washboard sections along the route that is currently not paved (EG the southern end of the road as it exits to 285). The road is no longer maintained in the winter and expect closure after the first heavy snow in the winter. There is a parking area at the closure gate on the Georgetown side of the pass to allow access to the pass by foot or snowmobile during the winter.

At the summit of the pass, hiking trails lead east to Mount Bierstadt (el. 14,060 ft./4285 m.) among other places. (Wikipedia)

(Wikipedia)

The Wild Boar statue at Country Club Plaza was created in 1922 by developer Jesse Clyde (J.C.) Nichols.

This is one of three early reproductions of the Wild Boar of Florence (sculptor Benelli in 1857), by the Marinelli Studios of Florence.

The Country Club Plaza (often referred to as The Plaza) is an upscale shopping district and residential neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. It was the first shopping center in the world designed to accommodate shoppers arriving by automobile. The 55 acre (223,000 m²) site is about four miles (6.44 km) south of downtown, between 45th and 51st streets to the north and south and between Broadway and Madison Street to the east and west. The Kansas state line is one mile (1.6 km) to the west.

Established in 1923 by J. C. Nichols and designed architecturally after Seville, Spain, the Plaza comprises high-end retail establishments, restaurants, and entertainment venues, as well as offices. The neighborhoods surrounding the Plaza consist of apartment buildings and upscale houses, especially those of the Country Club District built along Ward Parkway on the Plaza's southern and southwestern side. The Country Club Plaza is named in the Project for Public Spaces' list 60 of the World's Great Places.

(Wikipedia)

A view of Pikes Peak and golden aspen trees from the lower elevation at the beginning of Pikes Peak Highway, west of Colorado Springs.

The Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile (31 km) toll road that runs from Cascade, Colorado to the summit house of Pikes Peak in El Paso County, Colorado, at an altitude of 14,115 feet (4,302 m). It is open year-round, "weather permitting", i.e. when snow removal is not excessively difficult.

The Pikes Peak Highway was constructed in 1915 and financed by Spencer Penrose at a cost of $500,000. However, an earlier road up the mountain, the Pike's Peak Carriage Road, dates back to 1889. The road is maintained by the city of Colorado Springs. (Wikipedia)

Fall Colors on Loveland Pass

Loveland Pass, elevation 11,990 ft (3,650 m). above sea level, is a high mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado, U.S.A..

It is located on the Continental Divide in the Front Range west of Denver. U.S. Route 6 traverses the pass; the twisty road is considered to be especially treacherous during the winter months. A steep, steady 6.7% grade, along with numerous hairpin turns on either side, make it difficult to snowplow the road regularly.

Loveland is the highest mountain pass in the world that regularly stays open during a snowy winter season. When the Eisenhower Tunnel opened in March 1973, it allowed motorists on Interstate 70 to avoid crossing the pass directly. Trucks that cannot pass through the tunnel (those carrying hazardous materials and those over 13'11" (4.2 m) in height) must still take US 6 across Loveland Pass, 800 vertical feet (244 m) above the tunnel.
