2208 at North Strathfield

2208/KL80/train/KL81/B76 race north through North Strathfied, headed for Hornsby where the train will reverse onto the North Shore line as part of the maintenence of the line.

This was 2208's first run back in service, after being stored for a number of months. Owned by ARG, it is avaliable for lease or hire (in this case, hired for the weekend by Southern Shorthaul Railroad).

4904 at Unanderra

Running as M622, 4904 and KL81 chatter towards Unanderra with a RailCorp ballast cleaner set, bound for Chullora.

At the time this was taken, 4904 has only recently been released from overhaul and repaint at Goulburn. KL81 has since been cycled through the workshops at Goulburn and returned to service in SSR colours, once more numbered as 4910.

KL80 Passing Redfern

KL80 slowly passes through Redfern with a pair of turnout wagons, carrying new turnouts for Sydney Yard. This was an opportunistic shot at best, as platforms 1-4 were closed for trackwork, making a shot from the footbridge the only option. As we were not expecting it, camera settings were still on black and white!

KL81 Passing Campsie

KL81 (4910), KL82 (4917) and GM10 (the latter outshopped in Southern Shorthaul Railways colours) head east through Campsie early on a Monday morning. At the time, all three locos were owned by CFCL Australia and were on lease to Southern Shorthaul Railroad. Now, SSR owns all three locos, with the two KL's renumbered and repainted into SSR livery.

If some of these photos look familiar, they probably are - I'm organising my photos from 2008, and taking the oppertunity to rework some of them and either upload for the first time, or replace older photos.

Overgrown

When P&O Trans Australia initially started, it was to provide their own "in house" rail service between the P&O/CRT (QRNational) joint terminal at Yennora and Botany. Until the formation of P&OTA, this service had been run by LVRF, Patrick PortLink and QRNational.

P&OTA started by purchasing two 44 Class locomotives from CFCL Australia (71 and 77)to operate the twice daily service from Yennora to Botany and return. Due to an initially high failure rate, P&OTA would spot hire a locomotive from SSR to cover for one unit being out of action for repairs. For a brief period, KL81 was used on this service to replace 4471.

Here 4477 and KL81 are waiting while a crew member calls the signal box to ask permission to proceed onto the mainline. It's hard to believe this is one of the busier rail served container yards in Sydney (outside of Port Botany, of course), going from the extensive growth on the track and around the signal phone!

4477 Departing Yennora

GM22 at Leightonfield

GM22, GM10 and KL81 speed through Leightonfield Station as D157 light engines to Goulburn.

At Goulburn, the KL (49) will be shunted into the Goulburn Railway Workshop (recently taken over by CFCLA on lease from RailCorp), while the two venerable GM's will return to Sydney with a RailCorp ballast rake.

At the time, we were waiting on 2BM7, which was behind G516/CLP9/CLF1. The timing was perfect for this movement to be 2BM7, although we got a bit of a shock to see the bulldog nose. Still, as the bulldogs were tucked in behind the G Class on 2BM7, it was nice to see GM22 holding up the bulldog side of things for SSR. It used to be rare to see GM22 without GM27, although these days they are more often apart than together! GM10 is also seen away from it's usual partner of S317.

KL81 and 4477 combine to work T281 container trip from Port Botany to Yennora for new operator P&OTA. P&O had purchased two 44 class from CFCLA (4471 and 4477), although one of the units was usually out for maintenence at any given time. At the time this was taken, KL81 was on short term hire to P&O from CFCLA to replace 4471.

Due to a motive power shortage, ARG hired a number of units from Southern Shorthaul Railroad. Heading up 9182 Manildra Group containers is KL81, T387, T385 and GM10 (out of frame behind T385), seen here attempting to depart the siding at Bomaderry.

Unfortunately, due to the train running late, and issues with train control, the train was put back into the siding to wait for an evening departure - the Kiama to Bomaderry line is already saturated, and there are no spare paths!

The Final 9182

The final 9182 Bomaderry to Botany container service ran today. Due to locomotive failures, it was brought into Sydney behind KL82/KL81/KL80/3104. This was to be the last ARG train I would ever photograph on NSW rails.

...annoyingly, I feel I could have gotten a better shot than this!

...is still a funny looking branch line unit, and is still one of my favorites. KL81 is seen here from the ballast at Thirlmere during the recent heritage transfer to Broadmeadow. For more details, see here

...as the sun slides away, 4910 watches on. A veteran of many years much like the other units in this consist, 4910 was given a new name, a new colour scheme and continues to work on into the future, unlike many of her sister units.

...look mighty in person. The 49 class (KL81 was once known as 4910) were built as branch line units and are quite small compared to their larger cousins... Still looks big in person!
