This terrace almost encircles the summit---on the north side it is eroded away.
Looking about north from atop a small conical hill on the terrace. The hill was about 20 feet (6m) tall.

Photographed in the southeast portion of Poison Spider Mesa, looking about southeast. Across the river is the bizarre fin topography called Behind the Rocks. In the distance: the slightly-snowy La Sal Mountains.

Update in March 2009: According to people at the BLM, these are contour pits, man-made structures "designed to control sedimentation and salinity contributions to the Colorado River. They were constructed by the BLM by the thousands in the Cisco Desert in the 1980s…" Officials eventually determined that the structures did not appreciably reduce sedimentation and salinity. Thanks to Ann Marie Aubry of the BLM for solving this mystery and to Byron Loosle of the BLM for steering me to the person with the answer.

The collapse of Wall Arch was first noticed on August 5, 2008. Rubble created by the fall blocked the original Devils Garden Trail. The trail was re-routed from below the arch to this site higher up. This portion of the trail is an easy scramble on rock steps, but is not for everyone: the man at bottom was turning around because it was too spooky for him. My hiking companions are near the top: Jack Arnott in the bright red shirt and Michael Ricks in the yellow shirt.

In 2006 I photographed the arch from below, where now is just a pile of rubble.

People near the end of the Delicate Arch Trail in Arches National Park. Delicate Arch is behind the ridge. The dark sky was an omen of things to come: it poured rain a little later while I was at the arch.

Dennis Udink stands "inside" a berm. Vegetation is pronounced at the berm's base, forming a semi-circular garden.

Side view of a berm shows how its top is not level: the downhill portion is higher than the uphill portion. Whether the berm was built this way or weathering has created this sloping form is unknown. If I learn that the berm is equally high throughout, meaning that I can't see straight, I'll eat my words.

Arches National Park is noted for its unusual and dramatic scenery. Just as there can be no beauty without ugliness, the park's dramatic topography gets some of its appeal from the fact that it is surrounded by large tracts of dull-as-dirt scenery. This is an example of the latter. This is about 800 feet (240m) away from the Delicate Arch Trail, a path set in scenery that is anything but bland.

Joe, who normally stays in the background, was unaware that I captured him basking in the sun on Floating Island's south summit. It was a glorious day of perfect weather. Visibility was at least 30 miles (48km). On the right: the Silver Island Mountains.
