A Texaco gas sign lies on the ground at the abandoned gas station at Grasmere, idaho (on SR 51, south of Mountain Home). The building in the scene is a storage shed or some such thing. This was shot in May 2012. In 2010 the sign was still standing, with a badly-faded "Texaco" logo in the round portion.

My vantage point was at the center of this WikiMapia aerial view and I was looking eastward.

The kid in me got a thrill by riding in a Sound Transit hi-railer on a short section of the eastside rail corridor in the Kennydale neighborhood of Renton. That corridor contains a rail line partially abandoned by BNSF. It runs northward from Renton to Snohomish.

Two hi-railers were present to give rides to persons at a celebration marking the finalization of purchase of the corridor. The other hi-railer belonged to BNSF. The celebration took place at the Seahawks Training Center, whose main building is visible at left. Passage through the overhrown grade was noisy---the trees and plants vigorously brushed the underside of the vehicle.

The person pictured here is making a statement. However, the nature of the statement is unknown. Maybe ignorance is bliss.

Even though the person in the photo resembles me and the person is wearing clothes that I owned at the time the picture was taken, I disavow any knowledge of the action (truly bizarre), the person (not me!), and the place (the Transit Center parking garage in Kent, Washington).

No. It's right-side-up. It one of those images that fools the brain. It is a gray rock outcrop on a beach with holes in it. The holes contain sand, stones, and pieces of shells. Sometimes when I look at it, the sand seems to be thrusting out of the holes. The sun was shining from upper left. Seen at Rialto beach in Olympic National Park, Washington.

A clogged toilet is annoying, but is easily unclogged with the proper tools. My first method of attack utilizes a wooden mallet (hammers often crack the porcelain). If the savage blows of a mallet do not get rid of the problem, I next try drilling a hole through the clogging material. This allows water to better saturate the offending material, leading to an impressive “relaxation” of the blockage, followed by a successful flush.

However, those methods are sometimes not sufficient to clear the flushing channel. At those times I rely on specialized tools such as beeswax, pliers, and scissors. On one occasion I had to use a box cutter.

I hope to better describe such work by posting a video of the activity. Stay tuned.

The internal drive on my Dell 4700 desktop computer died on March 2. The 250-gigabyte Maxtor drive was made in 2005. This picture was taken two days later, after I had set up my netbook computer to continue with life. :-)

I didn't lose any data, as it all resides on an external drive and that is backed up to another external drive. A technician was able to salvage all the stuff on the bad drive, so I also did not lose data that my programs created and saved to the C drive.

The dead drive was replaced with a two-terabyte Seagate drive. Re-installing all my programs on it took about a full day.

I'm posting this six and a half tears after I took it, so my memory about some details is weak. Here I was very close to the boundary of Arches National Park. I think I was inside the park, but I can't remember. This indecision about a boundary borders on meaninglessness. The view is to the southwest.

This retaining wall separates eastbound I-84 traffic (what I am here) from westbound traffic located higher up. It is a mile or two west of Glenns Ferry, Idaho and acts as a landmark for me when I'm driving in this area. Below is a photo of the same place on a sunny day.

Sheep Rock is the thin formation at center. It looks like a spire but it's a ridge or wall. Most pictures of it are taken from ground level off to the right.

Dirty sandstone depresses, dismays, and disgusts me. During my trips to Moab I have endured all manner of dirty sandstone: red sandstone, orange sandstone, yellow sandstone, purple sandstone, and gray sandstone. Only one word adequately describes that stuff: UGLY.

On one trip to Moab I went prepared to rectify the situation and the result is shown here. Armed with industrial-grade bleach, buckets of elbow grease, and a wire brush, I did some "cleaning." The casual viewer might ask "Why did he start half-way down this outcrop rather than at the top? The answer lies in my adherence to the teachings of my spiritual guru (the Bhagwan Hotair Windbag of Antelope). He preaches that "to advance spiritually, one must begin at the bottom of the spiritual ladder and work one's way up to a more exalted condition."

Thus I started cleaning at the bottom of this sandstone outcrop and worked my up. The casual viewer might also ask "Why did he stop where he did, leaving the job unfinished?" The answer is threefold:
1. My wire brush was worn out
2. I was exhausted physically even though I was pumped up spiritually
3. It dawned on me that leaving a bold line of demarcation would show the effectiveness of my work, thus inspiring others to join me in this worthy endeavor.

Of course, I need to return to complete the job. When I do I'll bring extra brushes. I won't need any more bleach or elbow grease because there was a lot left over and I stashed it nearby (cryptobiotic crust make great camouflage!). I just might change the focus of my trips to Moab from "hiking" to "cleaning." So much dirt, so little time…

Naturally I cannot divulge the exact location because that might lead to theft of my elbow grease ($$$), but I can reveal that this is a short distance outside of Arches National Park, east of the ridge containing Delicate Arch Viewpoint. Geotagging is merely approximate for this reason.
