TGIF! I thought I put up another shot from my great morning at Matheson Hammock Park a few weeks, well now actually months ago. The sky was amazing and the water so calm that morning, absolutely beautiful!

Moonlight Garden Tour 2013, Villa Vizcaya, Coconut Grove, FL

Going through my already uploaded but never made public shots, I came across this one from my sunset shoot at Vizcaya a few weeks ago. I have been there many times, but I never had any luck with the clouds. And what is a sunset without clouds.

That day the sky didn't look too shabby (nice puffy clouds) as I left work, but by the time sunset came around most of those had disappeared into thin air. And as I mentioned in a previous shot I couldn't shoot from the boat landing from which you have the best view. The area was closed off "for my own protection". And there was a big sign stating “To NOT Enter”.

I quick glance around, no one is looking…

For a better view please stick to Fluidr. Why couldn't Flickr use their template? Seriously!

Vizcaya at Sunset

I am back from a fantastic weekend of shooting, but didn't get to those shots yet. So here is one from last week.

I thought I give sunset at Vizcaya another try. I have been there many (and I mean MANY) times, but I never had any luck with the clouds. And what is a sunset without clouds.

I hope you don't mind, but I had to share another shot from this incredible sunrise. Never seen the bay that calm before.

I uploaded a similar shot a while back. For this one I put the tripod on top of the rocks instead of standing to the left of them.

While waiting for the "Wings of the Tropics" exhibit to open at 9:30 am I went for a little walk around the gardens. Near the butterfly garden I heard chirping and saw movement in a tree. Circling around I same more movement and then spotted this little cutie.

Costa's Hummingbird Feeding

After the beautiful sunrise at Matheson Hammock Park I drove around the corner to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. I hadn't visited the place in 4+ years and I wanted to check out their latest addition, the "Wings of the Tropics" exhibit.

In addition to many, and I mean MANY butterflies two pairs of hummingbirds also call the exhibit their home. They were a lot of fun to watch as they were zooming around and feeding on the Dombeya flowers. They however were not that easy to get a shot of, fast little buggers they were. I was surprised when I put the shots on the computer and saw this one. I didn't think I got a single sharp shot.x

The Costa's Hummingbird is very small, a mature adult growing to only 3 to 3½ inches in length. The male Costa's has a mainly green back and flanks, a small black tail and wings, and patches of white below their gorgeted throat and tail. The male Costa's Hummingbird's most distinguishing feature is its vibrant purple cap and throat with the throat feathers flaring out and back behind its head.

Sun Up Over Biscayne Bay

After a crazy and exhausting work week I had no intentions getting up early Saturday morning, But our "lovely" neighbors had other plans for me. They decided that 5:00 am is the perfect time for doing laundry and so here I was at 5:30 am listening to the racket of a washing machine on its last leg and a neighbor banging sliding glass. Might as well get up, don't I?

I had a vague plan of hitting Matheson Hammock after I hadn't been there since November. But to be honest I rather would have caught some more zzz's.

The clouds looked nice enough and I hoped for a decent sunrise. I was wrong! Sunrise turned out to be absolutely gorgeous and I was glad to be out there to witness it!

Making the Best of It

So the trend continues... right now I don't seem to have any luck with sunrises. I whether get too many clouds like two weeks ago at Babcock-Webb WMA or no clouds like today, even though there were clouds in the forecast. Can't trust the weatherman (or woman).

But at least water levies are slowly going down and the rocks are coming back into view at the lake and I managed to get a keeper or two. This is a good thing as the birds were anything but cooperative, actually they were nowhere to be found.

With no real cold weather to speak of this year the mosquitoes are alive and well.

Actually it wasn't too bad that day until the sun went down. 15 minutes after sunset they came out in full force. And I being the only one around you can well guess whom they feasted on.

Night Falls for the First Time (in 2013)

From to many clouds at sunrise to no clouds at sunset, this seems to be the theme of the month. This is another shot form the first sunset in 2013. Ivan and I drove down to my favorite lake in the Everglades.

It was cloudy to partly cloudy all the way south until we entered Everglades National Park. All the clouds just disappeared. Just my luck.

Sunset was pretty uneventful but I can be stubborn. And while Ivan already had packed up I waited around. And 15 minutes after the sun had set I noticed faint rays in the sky and the colors didn't look too shabby either.

R.I.P. Tevy

I Have My Eyes on You

These shots are from only two weeks ago. When Linda and I arrived at the zoo at Noon Tevy was sleeping. No surprise there. But we were quite surprised to see her running back and forth when we returned a few hours later. We spent almost an hour watching and shooting her. She wasn't showing any signs that she isn't doing well. But yesterday morning she was found dead in her night house.

According to Zoo Miami the nearly 13 year old tigress had begun exhibiting general lethargy and a decline in appetite nearly a month ago but then seemed to recover only to once again demonstrate the same symptoms last week. After attempting several treatments without any sign of improvement, the decision was made to immobilize her so that veterinarians could do a more in depth examination. During the exam, Tevy appeared to be jaundiced and was accordingly scheduled for treatment that the staff hoped would lead to a recovery. Unfortunately, she was unable to overcome the severity of her condition. A full necropsy on the body was performed in the afternoon and the preliminary diagnosis is that Tevy was indeed suffering from advanced liver failure.

First Sunset of 2013

Well, let's hope this isn't a sign of things to come...

The first sunset of 2013 was kinda blah. It was completely overcast when we left Miami at 3:45 pm and "trusting" the weather forecast it was supposed to be partly to mostly cloudy in the Everglades. When we got there at 5:00 there wasn't a single cloud in the sky and that also didn't change.

At least the rocks are out again.

The Blue-grey Tanager is a medium-sized South American songbird of the Tanager family, Thraupidae. Its range is from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia and northern Brazil, all of the Amazon Basin, except the very south.
