Camel Owner Scrubbing His Camel at Sunrise, Pushkar
Note the dust and golden line!

Pushkar Cattle Fair is famous for the trading of animals, main attraction is always camels. Soon after sunrise, traders start getting their camels ready i.e. scrubbing, washing, decorating with colourful ropes and bells, etc. As traders start visiting each other to buy and sell soon in the morning. I caught this trader while he was dusting and scrubbing his camel at sunrise. And I would not hesitate to say that I had to struggle hard even to get this basic shot, I missed very good shots, as some amateurs were flaunting all the norms of being a good photographer, above all being a good human being. Photographers were getting so greedy and desperate for shots that they were even yelling on fellow photographers in the fair. There was a day, when I could not shoot without having a photographer in the frame. Anyway, I took it as part of the Fair and life, never asked anyone to move out of frame and clicked what I could in peace. Everyone, wishes to return with the most unusual and best shots anyone could ever do at Pushkar, and that makes the things really bad, without working hard.

Sometimes, I was standing at obscure spots where a novice photographer (I am not expert to claim myself) could not hope for a shot at all. But as soon as people used to notice me with `L' series Canon lens, will crowd the place behind me or on the side. Above all, when I am doing the shot, will ask me to sit down to be out of their frame or will start directing the subject themselves, which I am shooting, after waiting for so long time. I was quite amazed how human-being can be, in spite all the education. Most of these people when meet at forums in their towns, talk about big ethics and norms and behave differently.

Camels and Traders at Dusk at Pushkar

© Capt Suresh Sharma. All Rights Reserved

This year, I spent 8 days at Pushkar Cattle Fair, so lucky to do that. I had started my still photography in a systematic manner only at Pushkar, last year. When I look back, I feel I have done reasonable improvement, need to do a lot, of course. On the 1st November, almost everyone had packed cameras after the most sought after sunset shots, I had not done so. Now, my habit is that I do not pack my cameras to tuck it away in the bag and push under the car seat. No one could notice, including me, these dramatic clouds, which were far from ordinary. I noticed a camel trader/ owner standing and leaning against his long bamboo stick and looking at the sky. I made a quick move, as he was standing quite nicely and made a good composition. By the time I did my first frame with few stops under, I noticed the golden line on the edges of the clouds and noticed that its like a spot light or like a window, just to frame my subject within. I did few more shots. In the meantime, a camel-cart was passing through the frame and I captured it.

This image is not still that great, but never pack your cameras till you are very very sure that now there is nothing one could shoot and has to move to the base for the night. This was a little bit of reward for my patience and discipline.
