For our own convenience we captured my office (4th floor just above the column in the middle) and did the loading and development in the waste room in the basement. Shot by Christoph Blasche and Mirko Derpmann with a 1.100 litre pinhole dumpster on Rollei Vintage paper. Exposure 2.5 minutes

Hamburg-Harburg Harbour

The title looks like a multiple choice test for a spelling bee. But this is in fact the harbour of Harburg which is a part of Hamburg. There must have been a reflection in the foreground or a lightleak causing the foggy effect. Taken by Christoph Blaschke, Mirko Derpmann and garbagemen Peter Hermann Schammer and Kai Erik Haake with 1.100 litre dumpster transformed into a pinhole camera. 15 minutes exposure time on a very quiet day.

And now for something completely different. Most of the trashcam pics were made downtown while this one is a rather rural view of the source of Hamburg´s power. In fact it is only a ten minute drive from the buzz of the city but it feels remote. Taken with a 1.100 litre dumpster by Christoph Blaschke, Mirko Derpmann and Max Soller on Ilford multigrade IV with 10 minutes exposure.

This is one from the archives. The first trashcam picture we made just to find out if it was possible. So this is not Hamburg but Berlin. We were so afraid the bin would bend and light would leak in that we didn´t dare to move it more than a few metres away from our office (Yes, it is nice to work here). As you can see our processing skills have developed since then. But still a gripping shot. It was taken on four sheets of Rollei Vintage paper we glued together to get the giant format. Exposure is about 4 minutes.

This picture shows a race against time. We started at 5 pm in fairly good light. 10 minutes later it was dawning just a little bit and we started calculating if the rapidly vanishing light (dawn at 6:30) would be enough to expose the paper. We closed the hole at 6:40. Obviously it wasn´t enough for a real daylight shot but it is still very bright for a night shot. Illuminated darkness.

Framing a Trashcam Shot

Christoph Blaschke and dustman Werner Bünning are discussing the best angle for the "Katharinenfleet" shot. Werner has been a construction worker before he started working for the garbage collection. In fact he did work on one of the houses you can see on the finished shot. The framing is kind of special because a dumpster doesn´t have a viewfinder (of course you could build one but on the other hand you could do a lot of things. We didn´t). So it is always a lot of guessing and pointing. With one exception (the G&J shot taken from the public BBQ) we always kept the bin on the ground to keep the special lower viewpoint. So on the final shot you have the fence in the foreground which really gives an idea of the unlimited DoF of the pinhole camera.

Landungsbrücken in St. Pauli is one of the main touristic sights in Hamburg. Today only the small touristic ferries cater the pontons but a hundred years ago this was a busy terminal for freight and cruise traffic. Picture was taken by Christoph Blaschke, Mirko Derpmann and Roland Wilhelm with a 1.100 litre dumpster pinhole on a 106x80 cm sheet of Ilford multigrade. This is binman Peter Strahl taking a picture of the church in Hamburg Altenwerder with his pinhole dumpster. Binmen start their tour very early, this was at seven in the morning and he was already up and working a few hours. so it comes in handy that taking trashcam pictures is mostly waiting. This picture is obviously far away from being breathtaking. But since flickr is really not the right platform to share pictures more than a metre wide we thought you might be interested in a crop. So here it is. This is what you would see if you put your nose on the "Marco Polo Tower" print. As you would notice the 0,8 mm hole is unable to render all the detail in the scene which is compensated partly by the huge negative format of 106x80 cm.
