leon_steber posted a photo:

My memories of Roma....
I wanted to go to Roma just to eat, but as I'm gluten-free I thought it meant all the goodies like pasta and pizza were out.
Not so…
Walked to a place not far from my hotel that I found off a list on the internet. I have the address somewhere at home because I stole one of their hand written menus. The menu had an ink stamp at the top with a reminder: "What do you need to remember to do today?", below which were a couple embraced in passionate love-making.
I went early, so it was empty restaurant. My waiter Angelo, was a 50-something, bald guy who laughed and agreed with me for refusing the water but saying yes to some wine. He bought out a whole bottle. I told him I was a Coeliac and he said no problem. He already knew I wanted pizza and asked me if I liked mushrooms. He considered my positive reply for a moment and said yes, he knew what to get me. The pizza was simple and really good, and the company was great, Angelo hung around and we chatted about the changing world, my home and his home. I said I'd come back the next night to have pasta.
I walked in and Angelo greeted me again, another bottle of wine on the table. Do I like fish he asks? It's agreed, he knows what to get me. I sample the antipasto; grilled capsicum, olives, courgette between glasses of wine and bread that they'd got for me from the pharmacy today. Then Angelo brings out nut crackers and I suspiciously ask him what they're for. It's for the lobster, he says. I've never ordered lobster at a restaurant, in fact, I rarely eat shellfish unless I'm trying to impress a girl or something. God knows why, because this lobster, spaghetti with cherry tomatoes and parsley was absolutely incredible. Awesome. A taste sensation. I stumbled out of that restaurant, smoked a cigarillo and had the same sort of huge grin on my face as if I'd just had the best sex in my life.
Then it was out on the town with a lovesick Melbourner, more wine, and I somehow remember giving roses to young, madly-in-love Italian couples.
Cigar Time, Trinidad

leon_steber posted a photo:

I was sitting in the main square in Trinidad having my usual afternoon cigar and this guy came and sat down next to me. Wherever you go in Cuba there is no chance you're going to be alone for long, there'll always be someone to come and chat to you. I barely know any Spanish but it doesn't matter at all. I wish I could remember the guy's name, but I didn't write it down. Anyway, this guy had the worst teeth you can imagine, well what was left of his teeth anyway. He'd come down from his farm up the hill where he grew coffee to try and get some medicine, as he hadn't slept for 5 nights because of the pain. He couldn't get any aspirin either as it was only stocked at the international hospital. I ended up giving him some change, something I normally don't do, but I liked his story. In return he wanted to take me on a tour of his farm and give me half a kilo of kilo beans. I would have liked to have seen his farm but I had to meet a friend. We had a bit of a smoke together anyway. The cigars were locals, called Buzza and were quite horrible compared to the local cigars I'd run out of from Vinales. However the effect is the same, the lovely headspin and good feelings. No wonder Cubans are so friendly, I would be too if I smoked those every day.

Grand Teton National Park

leon_steber posted a photo:

Day 150: 117.3 miles, 7:37 hours, Stealth Camp 15mi S of Smoot

I got an early start this morning, it was beautiful to ride through the remainder of the park as the sun was coming up behind me. It was cold to begin with, slightly below zero, but by midday I had my rain clothes off.

After riding through Jackson Hole, slightly disappointed at not spotting any celebrities at the local Ace Hardware, I hit five miles of roadworks. They wouldn't let me ride through it on my own, so the shaggy-looking, chain smoking pilot car driver asked me to throw my bike on the back of his pickup:

"You'll have to put it on yourself though, liability and all that, you know..."

He did end up giving me a hand when he could see I was struggling with the weight of it. Turned out to be an interesting guy. He was fifty-eight years old and worked for five months of the year, then pissed off in the winter to the Bahamas or Mexico. Told me he owned twenty-eight condominiums around the country, an umbrella company to manage them, and was worth well over fifteen million dollars.

After another headspin-inducing apple, over-ripe banana and chocolate milk combo at Alpine, I gradually rode up to the uninhabited campground at about 7600 feet. There's no services available here, so it looks like I'll be shitting in the woods again tomorrow.

Taken during my North American bicycle tour. More photos and a travelogue can be found at www.leonsteber.com

leon_steber posted a photo:

Excerpt from my travelogue on the day this shot was taken:

Day 134: 132.29 miles, 8:42 hours, Fraser Lake RV Park
Today I passed the 10,000 kilometre mark. Not that I'm using kilometres anymore since living in the US for a few years. And today I also did the longest ride that I've ever done (>200 km). It's not fun riding at this pace. I know I need to hurry south as fast as I can before it gets really cold, but this sucks, I take no notice of anything around me. It's almost like having an 8-5 job again. The good thing about today though was the weather. It was sunny most of the day and I could finally strip off my smelly rain gear and survive in t-shirt and shorts. There was a slight headwind in the morning but matched by a lovely, much appreciated tail wind this afternoon.

Taken during my North American bicycle tour. More photos and a travelogue can be found at www.leonsteber.com

The sign above the Parkway theatre near Lake Merritt in Oakland. Used to be my old stomping ground. I loved Oakland, I loved that it didn't try to be pretentious like San Fran, just was gritty and real. Got mugged in Oakland, nearly got killed by a $22M football player in an SUV in Oakland, got my first skateboard in Oakland, got my "real" bike in Oakland and then quit my job and went cycling around America for half a year. Ya gotta love Oakland.
I remember when this photo was taken too. I had been looking for a place to rent and a girl had replied to my strange ad, saying that she had a place but I probably wouldn't like it (it was a cool, open layout studio but sleeping arrangements were a bit too close for any sort of privacy). We ended up meeting anyway and started hanging out together. Lost touch with her now, we had a big fallout for some reason, can't remember why, Caitlin was her name, that's right. She was a red head and was an awesome cook, she taught me how to cook artichoke, not that I've ever cooked it since, but she was pretty inspiring when it came to the kitchen. She was a young artist, really talented. Anyway, this shot was taken while I was a passenger in her SUV, after she'd picked me up after she found out I'd had this bad accident, I couldn't talk properly and had trouble seeing properly, massive headache, staples in the side of my head, but yet I still managed to take this photo.
Batad Rice Terraces, The Philippines

leon_steber posted a photo:

I lived and worked in the Philippines back in 1999. Whenever I'd had enough of Manila, which was quite often, I'd head up North either to go surfing in San Fernando (where I saw what "perfect sets" really meant, tiring myself out on trying to catch every single wave I could. Other times I'd ride the crazy night bus, airconditioned to the max, techno music loudly playing, all the way up past Baguio and up to Banaue where the rice terraces are. From Banaue you can catch a jeepney about twelve kilometres(?) out of town and then walk up a long winding path to the top of a hill, takes about two hours. Below the hill is the town of Batad (in the photo, the top of the hill that I'm referring to is top right). It's a long walk, especially in the tropical heat, but it's worth it. Batad is a truly magical place, no electricity, no mobile phone coverage. At night the only light is from the fireflies hovering around over trees. I returned in 2005 with a friend, it's quickly changing; most of the boarding houses have electricity and you can actually ride a jeepney to the top of the hill. Still peaceful though, I spent a few days after my friend left just walking around the terraces getting lost and chatting with the locals. I hadn't taken enough money out I ended up running out of money which was quite funny. This resulted me in not eating or drinking a thing on the day I left, then walking the twelve kilometres back into town in the tropical heat.

I was hanging out in the Baracoa main plaza, having my usual afternoon cigar and this young guy comes up to me and asks if I want to buy a Che Guevara bank note for a dollar (you can get them at any exchange place for a few local pesos, so I joke to him about it. Anyway, it's the way he can buy himself a soda or a drink at the local bar from time to time. We get chatting and eventually he invites me to go to the school where he works at because they were having a concert the next day. I think why the hell not and the next day we ride out to his village, a mile or two out of town. Frank turns out to be a physiotherapist and spends the morning taking me around with him as he sees his elderly patients. It was really great, and he explained a lot of things to me about Cuba that I'd had questions about.
This was the first patient we went to visit, he'd fallen out of a coconut tree when he was 19 years old. He was quite hard of hearing and had bad eyesight as well. I think the boy in the picture was probably his grandson.

I'd been in Trinidad for a few days and had seen this old man with his rooster several times. I thought he was trying to sell it or something but when I asked a friend a few days later, I found out it was actually his pet chook. He took it for walkies every day. Now I want a chook but I don't have a yard and I think the cat of the house might object...

I saw a few Che tattoos while in Cuba. There was one I really wished I had taken but that was before I'd gotten over my photo-shyness. The shyness was overcome with my afternoon cigar smoking which alwasy left me in one of those heady, smiley, full-of-confidence moods.
Anyway, this guy was standing at the doorway of his house and I just asked if I could take a photo of him. He was fine with that, but when I pulled out the camera and aimed it him, he indicated he didn't want his face to be in the photo. Which now when I think about it, actually seems to work quite well, it's an anonomous photo with just simple colours.
Again taken with the 20mm lens, meaning I have to get a helluva lot closer to people when I'm taking a shot. I must invest in a portrait lens some day...

An excerpt from my bicycle travelogue for the day this shot was taken:

Day 87: 59.79 miles, 4:27 hours, Sayward Junction RV Park

I suffered today. I'm still tired from the hiking in Tofino and it was bloody hot with a headwind for the entire day. Stopped at a great outdoor gear/bike shop in Campbell River where I bought some spare spokes for the first time. The whole process took about half an hour. First they tried to measure the spokes on my bike then they were checking sizes on a computer program they had. I thought a spoke was a spoke, but turns out I have different sized spokes on my rear and front tyres. They're now proudly attached to my bike frame with electrical tape. I feel more like a serious cyclist now. I should have got spare spokes ages ago, I knew something was missing in my life. My expertise for bicycle repair is limited to fixing a flat tyre. Maybe if I was to do this all again, I'd learn how to completely pull apart my bike and put it back together again before I started the trip. I got a quick "Replacing a Spoke 101" lesson from Dirk in Oregon but I wasn't really paying attention. Anyway, it'll never happen.

It was fifty miles between Campbell River and Sayward with nothing in between except waterless and toiletless rest stops. I stopped at one of the rest stops in the afternoon and fell asleep on a bench for forty minutes, I felt so weak and tired. Luckily I didn't need to ride the extra six miles into Sayward, but instead camped at the highway junction.

Taken during my North American bicycle tour. More photos and a travelogue can be found at www.leonsteber.com

Alaska Highway

Excerpt from my travelogue on the day this photo was taken:

Day 120 (Monday, 13 September 2004): 107.05 miles, 7:41 hours, Burwash Landing

Today was the worst. Colder than buggery again. I broke another spoke. Like yesterday, I broke the spoke as I was riding past a crash barrier at the side of a road curve. I didn't realise this until later. Whenever I stop to eat, there's never, never a place to lean my bike. But if I need to repair a broken spoke? There'll be a crash barrier right there. And there's barely any of these crash barriers out here, they're about as common as an open food store, of which I saw none today. Hopefully I don't see any more crash barriers in the next few days as I don't have any more spokes, except an emergency Kevlar spoke I had the foresight of buying. I had too much time to think today and I spent the time deciding I would give up riding and start hitchhiking south if I break another spoke.

Though it's cold, and the sun isn't out much, I'm still getting quite sunburnt on the only exposed part of my body, my face. It almost rained on me, just sprinkled a little but there were a lot of threatening clouds out which contrasted with the beautiful golden Autumn colours.

I'm exhausting myself. I'm sore. I'm sick of peanut butter, I'm sick of Snickers and chocolate. I haven't had fresh fruit since Fairbanks and I'm missing it badly. I found a free camping spot at the back of the Burwash Landing restaurant where there's a tour group of Germans also camped. I indulged in the $4 shower, the only pleasure I've had in the last few days and spoiled myself with a huge steak dinner.
