Montefiascone is a town and comune of the province of Viterbo, Italy, located on a hill on the southeast side of Lake Bolsena, 95 km north of GRA (Rome)
The name of the city derives from that of the Falisci (Mons Faliscorum, "Mountain of the Falisci"). Later, it was controlled by the Etruscans. It was suggested that Montefiascone occupies the site of the Etruscan Temple called Fanum Voltumnae, at which the representatives of the twelve chief cities of Etruria met in the days of their independence. Under the Empire, the festival was held near Volsinii.
Cathedral of Montefiascone

The first documents mentioning Montefiascone are from 853 CE, when it belonged to the bishop of Tuscania. In 1058 and 1074 the Popes Stephen IX and Gregory VII, respectively, stopped here. In 1093 the fortress was besieged by Emperor Henry IV. The importance of the fortress was confirmed by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa's visit in 1185.

In the following two centuries, as a Papal possession, Montefiascone lived its period of highest splendour. The Castle was often residence of Popes, and was consequently enlarged and embellished. During Avignon Papacy, it was the main residence of the Papal legate Cardinal Albornoz. In 1463, however, it was already decaying, as in the words of by Pope Pius II. The decline increased after the plague of 1657 and the earthquake of 1697.

It became part of the new Kingdom of Italy in 1870. It was damaged by two Allied bombings in May 1944.

The Po is a river that flows either 652 km (405 mi) or 682 km (424 mi) – considering the length of the Maira, a right bank tributary – eastward across northern Italy, from a spring seeping from a stony hillside at Pian del Re, a flat place at the head of the Val Po under the northwest face of Monviso (in the Cottian Alps) through a delta projecting into the Adriatic Sea near Venice. It has a drainage area of 74,000 km² in all, 70,000 in Italy, of which 41,000 is in montane environments and 29,000 on the plain.[2] The Po is the longest river in Italy; at its widest point its width is 503 m (1,650 ft).[1] The Po extends along the 45th parallel north.

Bologna è una vecchia signora dai fianchi un po' molli
col seno sul piano padano ed il culo sui colli,

Bologna la grassa e l' umana già un poco Romagna e in odor di Toscana...

Bologna per me provinciale Parigi minore:
mercati all' aperto, bistrots, della "rive gauche" l' odore
con Sartre che pontificava, Baudelaire fra l' assenzio cantava
ed io, modenese volgare, a sudarmi un amore, fosse pure ancillare.

Però che Bohéme confortevole giocata fra casa e osterie
quando a ogni bicchiere rimbalzano le filosofie...
Oh quanto eravamo poetici, ma senza pudore e paura
e i vecchi "imberiaghi" sembravano la letteratura...
Oh quanto eravam tutti artistici, ma senza pudore o vergogna
cullati fra i portici cosce di mamma Bologna...

Bologna è una donna emiliana di zigomo forte,
Bologna capace d' amore, capace di morte,
che sa quel che conta e che vale, che sa dov' è il sugo del sale,
che calcola il giusto la vita e che sa stare in piedi per quanto colpita...

Bologna è una ricca signora che fu contadina:
benessere, ville, gioielli... e salami in vetrina,
che sa che l' odor di miseria da mandare giù è cosa seria
e vuole sentirsi sicura con quello che ha addosso, perchè sa la paura.

The cathedral stands in the city centre, not far from the Palazzo Comunale and the famous Castello Estense and is connected to the Archbishop's Palace by a covered passage.

Penso a me, vent'anni prima, varcare una porta come questa con quella mia cartella coloratissima, della Seven, pesante e carica di libri inutili. Gli stessi libri che avrebbero dovuto fare la ricchezza della mia mente ma che col senno di poi considero alquanto neutrali per la mia crescita, anzi penso che alla fine alcuni di essi mi abbiano fatto addirittura male. Non male quanto mi hanno fatto alla schiena nel portarmeli dietro per mezza città tra un bus e l'altro, si intende...ma insomma...male. Tutto molto standard, tutto molto basico. Non era e non è un ambiente dove una mente può crescere libera, creativa e senza preconcetti.
Fortunatamente sono sempre stato un'autodidatta, e come diceva Mark Twain:

Non ho mai permesso che la scuola interferisse con la mia educazione

Ho sempre preso dalla scuola solo quello che poteva darmi di concreto: le basi.
Tutto il resto mi è piaciuto scoprirlo da me..e la cosa bella è che sono ancora all'inizio!

Dapprima c’è un’età in cui, d’istinto, passiamo la maggior parte del nostro tempo a giocare, e da questo gioco traiamo un grande senso di soddisfazione e naturale appagamento.
Poi arriva un momento in cui ci incupiamo, lasciamo alle nostre spalle tutti i giochi e siamo costretti a pedalare verso altri obiettivi, comuni e spesso imposti, ottenendoli poi senza trarne nessuna soddisfazione degna di tale nome.
Le chiamiamo “cose serie” e raramente ci lasciano il tempo per fermarci un attimo e voltarci indietro.
E forse è meglio così, perché voltandoci probabilmente rimarremmo spiazzati nel constatare che tutto quelli di cui avevamo bisogno per sentirci felici e realizzati ce lo avevamo già dalla nascita… Semplicemente lo abbiamo rimosso.
