The mask(s)

I’m still in my surreal mood and mode. What I love about this image is the duality it have in many levels.

It is a digital capture edited minimally in a computer, and the same transformed to a digital sabatier.

Both were printed using a laser print over acetate. The it was burned using the sun over a galgo’s paper prepared for a salt print. Modern and old times’ worlds melted, digital and analogical photography joined.

The image itself is dual too, is my face covered by a mask which is made using my face as the model. Positive and negative of myself. The mask which covers the face with an inverted copy of itself.

The reality turned to a virtual of itself. Which one is the “real”: the original?, the copy? the capture, the reproduction, the set of numbers in a hard drive, the paper printed copy in my hands?

If all are real or maybe none of it, it’s a dream? a nightmare? if I took away the mask I’m still wearing another mask? one made of flesh and skin?

And off course, double exposures.

That’s some clues about what I’ve been thinking about this photograph.

Watching the Olympics I was thinking how great will to be a photographer inside the Games, after a while I begun to think that it will be very disappointing to be able to see only one or maybe two sports at the same time. I will hate to think about the other images I could not capture.

The thoughts derived then to what defines or not a photographer: It's not the gadgets or the camera, it's not the decision of capture an image, it's not a point of view..... it's... it is not... it's not the concept, it's not the act itself, it's not... it's.... it's....

Non of the above, and all of the above among many others.

Then I realized. I can take photographs even if I'm not using my camera or have decisions about what to put in front of the lens. My decision is when to capture the image and among almost 12.000 images captures select which ones will be able to tell some story.

And my last decision is how to treat each image to build a series. How much information could I to remove and yet keep some index of each sport, and to try to take to the edge how our cultural memory help us to build significance from a series of color squares.

Please excuse my bad English, the Prozac don't mix well with my few bilingual skills.

I don't know in which category can this image fit. Any help will be welcomed. I use to work using materials found on the street, even trash; from glass to papers all are part of my search. Medical reasons have kept me without make images for a while. this one was made using a radiography found in the mud at the street some months ago and not branded black and white photographic paper. The exposure time is 48 hours under heavy glasses on my window. A couple of sunny days.

Went to downtown to buy some stuff with mom and Iván. Then the magic... a rainbow in the middle of the store... not manipulations only crop and color correction.
