Nothing dramatic here today, just a simple image of the Emerald city. Many landscape photographers shy away from cityscapes but I enjoy them, and they sell well so I don't see any negatives there!

Tonight, Bluey and I ran downtown to check out the new Ferris Wheel on the waterfront.

On June 29, 2012, the Seattle Great Wheel opened to the public on Pier 57. Located on Elliott Bay, the 175 feet (53 m) structure is the tallest Ferris wheel on the west coast and the only wheel that has been built over water. The Great Wheel is second in height only to the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, which is 182 feet (55 m) tall and noted as the tallest Ferris wheel on the east coast.

We have just 1 workshop left this year and will be adding 1 day Seattle & Portland dates in the near future. Please get in touch with me to discuss any private workshop events you may be interested in this summer, or workshops you may want to see us hold next year!

Okay okay...I'm back on my game. Thanks to everyone who supported me through posting my last garbage pic. This one I was waiting to post until I could process the RAW file correctly so here it is. Taken last night while out shooting the sound with Bluey and the new 5D Mark iii. I hope you guys like this one a little better.

Canon 5DMark III Round Two - The Takeover

The water was looking nice and calm last night so Bluey and I went over to Alki and waited for the light to fade. I liked the way the new spring growth in the foreground gives you the feeling that the jungle is slowly taking back it's land from man and it's concrete & glass version. Maybe you don't see that the way I do. Maybe you think I'm crazy. Either way...that's just fine with me.

This is another image taken with the new Canon 5D Mark iii. I am having a good time playing around with this camera and it is taking some getting used to. With my 5D2 I had gotten so used to it that I could gauge the exposure very well using a combination of live view exposure simulation and my histogram. With the 5D3, it appears that my histogram is much more accurate than it was on my 5D2 so where I used to purposely under expose my images on the 5D2, now those same exposures are extremely underexposed and I am finding that I do not need to underexpose my images anymore. I am also going a little stir crazy not being able to use Lightroom to process my RAW files. Come on guys!

Well here is one of the first shots I have taken with the 5D Mark iii. I haven't had a chance to get out anywhere really cool yet but I am having fun messing around with it and checking out the differences between it and the 5DMK2.

Here is another image from our first night of snowfall here in Seattle last week before being snowed in and driven into eternal boredom. I truly love snow and especially watching it fall but once the ice hits I am ready to tap out. :) I am sure my first image from this night has spread around the world by now after being picked up by Tumblr and re-shared a gazillion times. I really dislike that website and it, as well as a few others have caused me to place my watermarks in less conspicuous places.

Anyway.... many people have been asking me for widescreen desktop size images of mine that they could use for wallpapers or screensavers. This weekend I finished 5 collections of wallpapers available for purchase from my website for those who are interested. They can be found by
jumping over to www.aaronreedphotography.com/ and browsing the ScreenSavers tab.

We had a little bit of snow around the Seattle area today and after seeing Dene post a fb pic (no she didn't bother to tell me the sky had cleared) I jammed over to the bridge to check it out. Her and Hai were up there already freezing and firing away. There were some fast moving clouds that lit up with some pretty nice color about 15 minutes after sunset. I stuck around until the last light finally died out and bailed home just in time to slide up the hill to the house as it was freezing up.

Hope everyone is out enjoying the snow and having a little fun while staying safe.

We had nice overcast skies in Seattle this morning so I ran down to the Japanese Garden to see how the fall colors were coming along. The garden doesn't allow tripods so I grabbed this shot by laying face down on one of the walkways on the other side of the lake and balancing my camera with my filter holder. Many of the trees that normally change color have not changed or have barely started at this point but this end of the pond had some nice blends of color so it was worth the trip down.

Our final workshop of 2011 is coming up in 2 weeks and we currently have 1 spot still open. We have also announced our first workshop of 2012 on the Exposure Northwest site.
Surrounded by water, there are endless opportunities for great images here. We would love to see you there!

It is really hard to post a shot a day sometimes. Of course I don't have to, but I began trying to force myself to approximately 2 years ago. I don't have a huge folder stuffed with images ready to be posted. I usually just edit an image right before posting it, or sometimes the night before. I really don't shoot as much as I'd like to and in the past 6 months I have barely been out shooting much at all due mostly to the weather. Others like to do things differently and there is no right or wrong way to to anything surrounding photography in my opinion but if you challenge yourself to post more often, your editing skills and the cultivation of your style will strengthen and become more apparent to you and others. Sure, I could post a shot a week and make sure that it received it's maximum views and or favs, or I could really be selfish and bump my images over and over so I could be sure every last person on flickr saw them but what are those favs and comments really worth as they stack sky high? Do they make you a better photographer? Simmer on that one for a minute. Some people don't like to edit images at all and there are times (like during the wedding season) that I get tired of it myself but most of the time I really enjoy breathing life into a raw file, no matter if I am trying to create an image exactly as I saw it, or if I am pushing the creative envelope. Either way, and above all else I just enjoy it...and after all, that is what is most important now isn't it?
If you want in on our Palouse workshop next month there are 2 spots still available. I am heading there next weekend to check out the area and hopefully find some new & interesting locations to shoot as well.

Okay, for those of you that live in Seattle I have good news and bad news. The good news is, contrary to what stupid people like the weatherman and things like the calendar might tell you, TODAY was the real first day of spring! Unfortunately it was also the last day of spring. Tomorrow is the first AND the last day of summer. It will be winter again by the weekend. It was nice to get out and get a little light tonight and it extended pretty far into blue hour making for a nice break from the constant rain rain and more rain. Hope everyone got out there to shoot!

I got a chance to get back out and give this another shot tonight, this time with Aaron, Amy, Vinny, Pat & Tom. We took over gasworks park and threw fire at anyone that would stand still. I picture myself doing this in crazier and crazier places until I just say eff it and spin fire in the middle of the mall one day. :) We got some great shots from over near the old machinery and you will see some of those from the others who were here. It was a good time and actually, we weren't even the strangest people in the park. This shot would not have been possible without help from Aaron who loaned me the tripod I just sold him so I would have one to use until tomorrow when my RRS gets here. Thanks Aaron!

Here is another composition from this weekends abstract exploration. Let me know your thoughts on this one and which one you prefer between the two. Whether or not you like an image does not matter. WHY you like or dislike an image is the only important question you should ask yourself. By practicing this, you are able to learn something about every image you see. This especially is the best way to develop your eye for composition. In fact, this location is such a great tool for composition I think we will have to add this spot to our Seattle workshop in August. Speaking of workshops.... if you need an excuse to go to San Francisco, the Columbia River Gorge, the Palouse, Olympic National Park or the Oregon Coast please have a look at our available 2012 workshops. Most are half full so get in where you fit in. :)

I have been asked to be the judge for a Landscape & Nature themed photography contest that is being sponsored by Fotoflot and Tamrac on the thephotovote.com

I set out tonight to try to shoot some different things than I usually do. I made my way over to the University of Washington and ended up shooting the Cherry Blossoms, some Macro shots, some night shots of the campus and even a few self portraits. These are one thing I never post but I liked this one so I thought I would toss it up. Something different is always a good thing.

A pretty nice sunset tonight if you were in the right spot. The majority of the city was dark and ominous but the breaks in the clouds along the Olympics let me know that I would at least some light for a brief period of time. This image was captured at the peak of color as the setting sun lit up the skyline.
