I just got back from teaching my second Columbia River Gorge workshop this weekend and it was a scorcher. In Portland, the sun brings out people who don't get out any other time of year and they were everywhere. Avoiding the crowds and the sun in the afternoons required a retreat to lesser visited locations like Starvation Creek. You can imagine our surprise when we looked back to see this Native American gentleman riding up the middle of the creek on his horse. It was definitely a unique experience for all of us! A painter named Jim Kelly was there photographing this mans family at the creek as part of the Powwow Project www.powwowproject.com/ and they were kind enough to allow us to photograph them as well. You might think it is silly but I kind of felt like a little kid when a real Indian came riding up the creek.

Spring has begun to sprung all around the Pacific Northwest and around here the Tulips lead the charge. This year after being inspired by Lisa Moore 's beautiful images from last season, I tried to approach the tulips through a new set of eyes. This is the result. Now get outside and get yourself some spring!

Here's a little something I captured during the cold streak we had back in 2009. Ice can quickly build up to the point that it becomes too much and creates a messy image. The point just before that can bring amazing details like this. I hope you enjoy it.

Nothing dramatic here today, just a simple image of the Emerald city. Many landscape photographers shy away from cityscapes but I enjoy them, and they sell well so I don't see any negatives there!

Every year during the transformation of seasons the hills through Steven's Pass in Washington state erupt in beautiful fall color. There is no added saturation to this image or any other processing other than sharpening. It is a sight to see.

A surreal & beautiful fog display from Yosemite National Parks iconic viewpoint known as Tunnel View. A small child standing near by told his father that there was a waterfall falling into heaven. I'd say that is a pretty accurate description.

The Silvery Moon

When I was a child my Grandfather Momo (yes that was his nickname) would play the song "By the light of the silvery moon" on his record player and would sing along to me. I remember it well even after all these years. I'm not sure who the recording was performed by that he used to play because it is a song that has been done by many over the years including Doris Day. The version my Grandfather used to play was a male singer. Just about anytime I see a large moon or spend any time looking at the moon as I was doing while capturing this image, I hear my Grandfather singing inside my head. Memory is an amazing thing. Someday I hope to be able to sing this song to my child. Here's to 2012 and to the many memories ahead for all of us in 2013.

"By The Light of the Silvery Moon" is a popular song. The music was written by Gus Edwards, and the lyrics by Edward Madden. The song was published in 1909 and first performed on stage by Lillian Lorraine. Wikipedia

We finally made it home from the holidays. Siskisyou pass was closed for a time making our 14 hour road trip into a 2 day 20 hour road trip on the way down. The way back was smoother but I still haven't quite caught up yet. It was a great Christmas with friends & family for us. I hope you all had the same. Be careful out there on New Years eve! See you all in 2013! I have another higher contrast shot of this scene taken later in the evening with a larger moon as night set I will share with you all later.

Okay, I'm falling for it. Just last week I was complaining to Lisa that everyone always posts last years shots just before the next season comes creating a solid month of images from popular locations. Alas, I have fallen victim and been bitten by the spring bug. If you can't beat em, join em right? :) This image is from 4 years ago and I found it sitting in my RAW files and thought it deserved to see the light of day. Hopefully you do too. Spring is gearing up and right around the corner in the PNW. I feel fortunate to be able to see it on both coasts this year and to be able to experience it with my best friend Blue. :) I hope you all are enjoying the sunshine out there.
