My BFF asked me about makeup when we were last together in October. For Christmas, I put together this little kit for her.

I'd like to preface this with: I am not a makeup guru. I'm just a gurl who has over time developed a routine and feels pretty confident in what she's doing for herself. These are products that I feel one could use to dip their toe into daily makeup without much consequence. These are just my picks. The key is to find what works for you, your style and your routine.

1. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer. If you don't like shadow because it creases, you need a primer. This one has no color and I like it that way, but if you are used to using concealer as a primer, they also make tinted primers. Apply a dot to each lid and blend in all the way up to the brow line. Make sure it's dry before applying shadow.

2. Sephora All Over Shadow Brush. Brushes. Brushes. Brushes. No sponge applicators here.

3. MAC shadow in Naked Lunch. I love this shadow. I've been using it for about four years. It's a pinky-neutral with just a little shimmer. I use it as a base shadow almost every day. It's great as a base layer, but with the shimmer it's good on it's own too. (see youtube link below for application)

4. A good eyelash curler. I have the shu eumura, but sephora doesn't sell that anymore. My guess is it's because they've modeled their own after it. Curled eyelashes open up the eye, making it appear bigger.

5. Mascara. I've bought $20 and $30 mascaras and I always go back to Cover Girl. I have long (straight) lashes and they hit the skin under my eye. Cover Girl is the only brand that minimizes the smudges under my eyes. It's what works for me. Mascara is a highly personal and subjective product. If you don't like this, try another brand. People swear by Dior, but it didn't work for me.

6. Bare Minerals Lip Gloss I am so picky about lip gloss. If it's sticky, I'm not havin' it. The brand that I love, love, love is Bare Escentuals. The above is from the Bare Minerals line in Sugar Cookie an apricot-y nude. I also have a major love affair going on with the Buxom line. Never met a shade that I didn't like. Both lines have just a hint of sugary/chocolately flavor. Yum.

While putting this together I found a video from my favorite youtube makeup gal, Kandee Johnson, that is for a look that uses very similar products. She incorporates liner and blush - a good next step beyond the above. Watch around 2:00 for shadow application and eyelash curler.

Irish Cream

I made several batches of Irish Cream for Christmas gifts. I used the pinterest approved recipe here, with my own tweaks below. Most notably NO EGGS (I can't do it. I can smell them. It skeeves me out.), less booze and less almond extract. I used 4.5 oz Pellegrino bottles for individual sized treats.

8-10 oz. of Jamesons (I found half a bottle awfully boozy!)
1 14-oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 Tbls. chocolate syrup
2 tsp. instant espresso
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. almond extract

New running shoe day is big in our house. Exciting! This is my second pair of Asics Gel-Nimbus and I love them.

I have always been fitted for running shoes, but the last time I went to a store that had a computerized shoe finder thingy. You stand on it and it tells you your size, widnth and type of shoe for you. I was wearing a stabilizer shoe in B width. The computer suggested a cushion shoe in AA width. This has made all the difference. I used to get shin splits and I haven't had one issue this time around.

I'm not a runner. I've dabbled in it because my husband runs. I have made so many starts that last a couple months and then I'm back to the gym doing other things. This time around I've it's stuck and I think it's due to my shoes.

We happened upon Eilean Donan Castle at twilight on the drive to Skye. I say happened because we didn't really know it was there or that it was the castle on almost all Scottish tourist materials.

I'm proud to say that while this isn't the crispest photo, it is SOOC. The light was awesome and I was so fortunate to stumble upon this site at just the right moment.

Yes. A double rainbow. We were having tea at the little gift shop at Urquhart Castle and a double rainbow appeared. It was majestic to say the least.

I did utter a few "What does this mean?!?"'s and "It's so INTENSE!"'s, but Mark hadn't seen the video and didn't get it. I missed you guys right then and there.

Since we've returned numerous people have remarked at how lucky it is to witness such a sight. I supposed we could use it, so I'm not going downplay it.

This was our first view of Inverness. We needed to turn around and the driveway of Inverness Castle was the best place. We ended up staying in the Palace Hotel.

The River Ness is enchanting. I'm pretty sure the water level was high and it was moving!

This sort of looks like a Thomas Kinkade painting, but I like it anyway. Makes me think of Christmas. The whole time we were in Inverness I could only think of Christmas.
