I've got a bunch of pics I need to get to, so this is the last one from this series, at least for now.

Not much done to this one, just some sharpening and a little contrast/color adjustment done in RAW along with some exposure adjustment. All natural light here, and it's the second time I've gotten a bit out of my comfort zone of using lights while shooting with Sara. We shot for only about 20 minutes after walking around on the beach, and the bit of magic light around dusk never hurts!

This was towards the end of the amount of light left, and I had to turn the ISO up a bit. I wanted to start using a flash here, but forgot one of my stands back at the car. So I decided to see what the natural light could give me. I wish I hadn't chopped off her hand here, but I really liked the pic so here it is.

Grace Under Fire

I've seen a bunch of steel wool shots online and have wanted to incorporate it into a portrait for quite a while. I gave Sara fair warning about the possibility of her hair being caught on fire (we still took safety precautions), but she didn't hesitate to do it. As far as how tall she looks in the shot, she's 5'10" and I told her to wear the highest pair of heels that she had. I wanted a simple, elegant look for her because I knew the the background was going to be chaos!

The background is 3 different 10 second exposures laid over the original image, while she is from the original background. I had her stay perfectly still during the exposure (which explains why it's such a simple pose), during which a friend of mine was spinning the steel wool behind her. The crazy backwards 'Z' in the upper right corner is from one exposure where the wool came flying out of the egg beater, which I thought was pretty cool! At the end of the exposure, I had the flash set to fire at full power.

This is a public tunnel, so I had to have a couple friends as lookouts on both sides, and also figured that it would be best to do this as quickly as possible. Considering I had no idea what to really expect, I'm pretty happy to say that the whole thing took only about 20 minutes total.

Sometimes, it's really awesome being a photographer.

I did a shoot for an upcoming art show here in Orlando called Nude Nite. It's a really cool show using all sorts of mediums (painting, sculpture, photography, performance art) to display the human body. I managed to get one of my shots in, but for now I'll post a couple of the outtakes from our 3 hour shoot.

We originally were using the shirt because it was sheer, but after pushing the clarity slider I really loved how the texture of the shirt looked on her. I also really liked how strong her arms looked here, which really made me love this image. I'll be uploading more in the coming days, but you'll have to change your settings to moderate to see the rest...

I really love the crashing wave behind her in this one. There's so many really great shots I got from this day, and especially from this particular morning of the shoot. I may be uploading quite a few more from this day. Hope no one gets sick of her!

I left Orlando at 4AM to pick her up in Jacksonville, and then we drove down to Ponte Vedra to catch the sunrise, something I was surprised to learn that she had never seen before! Luckily we got a pretty good one! After that, she showed me around St. Augustine, and we shot in various places around the town. I have so many photos from this day, so I'll definitely be uploading more. I just have to get around to processing them out!

The Geotag is a rough estimation.

I loved this shot the moment I saw it on the back of the camera. I was playing around with mixing the ambient with the strobe, and took full advantage of high speed sync given that the shutter was at 1/800...

I met Sara earlier in the month, and absolutely loved her eyes, smile, and well, just about everything else. Throw in the fact that she's 5'10" without heels on and I knew I had to get some photos of her! We did a crazy complicated shoot that I'm still working on processing at the moment, but I also wanted some simple portraits of her.

This was shot against a wall in my living room with two lights. Zero retouching done here, this is just converted to black & white and sharpened slightly.

Light Test

I was doing some lighting tests last month for a group photo with 11 people that I had been hired to do. I had to make sure I had all the flashes firing properly, and that the Rayflash was going to give me the fill that I wanted.

Marlena volunteered to be my guinea pig, and we got some decent shots while just messing around with the lighting in my living room. This is one of those shots - and no, the eyes haven't been photoshopped. That's exactly what they looked like SOOC! I did however change the color of the background, and removed one of the softboxes. Some minor retouching on her and some lightening of the hair and I was done! You can compare with the original in the comments.

Strobist: One SB800 camera right fired through a 30" softbox, one SB700 camera left as a rim/hair light shot through a 24" softbox, and one SB800 on camera used as fill shot through a Rayflash. Triggered via CLS.

The Captain

The other pic didn't seem to garner much attention, but I still like the way these came out. In color with this much detail the photo just looks like a bad HDR, but black & white has a way of fixing a lot of those problems!

When I was processing this, I thought it just looked alright in color. But then I dropped the saturation and upped the clarity, and got this. With a little tweaking to the contrast & the shadows & highlights as well. Definitely makes for a more interesting photo than the original, which is posted below.

Nice Way To End The Day

Another from my impromptu photoshoot! It was a bit difficult to focus because of the low light and the fact that the boat was tipping back & forth. I had to wait for the horizon to be composed in the shot, and as a result this was the only one of them with their backs turned that came out in focus. I like how I managed to catch a moment right when they were laughing!

I went down to the Keys for the first time (despite living in Florida for 15+ years), and was trying to decide what to bring before I left. At the last second, I packed a flash even though I couldn't think of when I would use it, considering we'd be out in the bright sunlight for most of the trip.

We left before the sunrise, and got back after a really great sunset. We were done diving, but decided to catch the sunset from out on the water, and I decided to use the SB800 to take some portraits using the sunset as a background. Nothing crazy, but definitely helped out here. Glad I brought it!

Never Leave Home Without It!

We left before the sunrise, and got back after a really great sunset. This was a candid of the girls right after they came out of the water, trying to fix their hair at the same time. Jen must have seen the focus light, hence why she's looking at me right when I took the pic...

This is from a recent shoot where we were doing shots for a 'Save the Date' card. This is all natural light, but with some pretty serious work on the RAW processing side of things. I'll post the original, unedited RAW below for comparison. The only change that wasn't done on the RAW side was adding grass to the right side to cover up the parking lot...

Expecting Her Third

This photo actually has a lot of post work done to it - to see the original RAW, check out the comments below. We used chip clips on the curtains and on the cloth that we wrapped around her, and I didn't like the back of the chair in the shot. I also didn't like seeing the baseboard on the ground, so I extended the curtains. Cloning out the softbox was more of a problem than I thought it would be, but the room was extremely small and I wanted the light close to her. All in all, it was about 2 hours of post work...

The weather was supposed to be awful this day, so we moved up the shoot to avoid the rain. We felt a couple of drops right when we started shooting, and she got pretty nervous since it was a decent walk back to the car. I told her it would pass, and luckily, I was right. The inclement weather made for a great background, though!

The Final Shot
