One of 4 murals designed to represent Africa, America, Asia and Europe. Daughterty painted the murals in 1921 and there were seen a break from the conventional style of the time. The murals are 10 x 46 ft high and are called The Four Continents. Other work by Daugherty has hung in MOMA, The Smithsonian and The Whitney. After his painting career he went on to be an award winning children's author. The Spirit of America was the cover of a February 1970 Life magazine and created interest in Cleveland to save the State Theatre. The murals can be seen in the Ireland Lobby of the State Theatre. The murals were last restored in March of 2003. These images are from 1973.

"Lunch with the Minotaur: The Greeks had a word for a mean old monster who sometimes dressed like a bull, still other times sported the body of a man and head of a bull. They called it a Minotaur.

This ancient legend inspired Daniel Rassmusson, New York artist, to paint key scenes for 178 feet along the sparkling new 'tea room' at Halle's. Only new it's called th Minotaur Room and it's on the ninth floor. It opens Monday.

Recommended by Kay Halle for the job, Rassmusson painted the legent in soft grays and whites on five walls up to 14 feet high. He supposedly jumped into his painting without any advance sketches, a fantastic feat if true." -- photo verso
The Spirit of America was the cover of a February 1970 Life magazine and created interest in Cleveland to save the State. The Murals can be seen in the Ireland Lobby of the State Theatre. The Murals were last restored in March of 2003 and these images are from 1973.
