Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This 1866 G. D. Wakely stereograph shows patrons and the interior of the Library of Congress. The library was located in the US Capitol building until a separate facility opened in 1897.

The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This George F. Gates image from the 19th century shows a group on Flag Staff Ledge in Mauch Chunk, PA. The NYPL suggests a nebulous date of 1870-1885 for this image.

Details and History
The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This James Zellner image from the 19th century shows a group overlooking the narrows, likely from summit hill. The NYPL indicates a nebulous date of 1859-1885 for this image, indicating dating is difficult. Bill Auld's survey of photographers of old Mauch Chunk reports Zellner was active from circa 1870 to the 1890s, limiting the earliest date significantly.

Details and History
The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This circa 1871 William Gunnison Chamberlain portrait of a Ute man has minimal bibliographic detail. Further information on the photographer's life and work can be found in Palmquist and Kailbourne's bibliographic dictionary "Pioneer Photographers of the Far West". Chamberlain first photographed the Ute people during an 1871 trip through the Rocky mountains. He continued working int he Denver area through the 1890s. His irreplaceable library of negatives was destroyed in an 1883 fire, along with any information not published on the extant stereoviews.

The Ute people were wary of being photographed. Accounts of the time attribute this to worries of becoming sick, something we might attribute to interaction of an outsider with a relatively closed community. Often neglected is the political climate of the era. The long running Black Hawk War (1865-1872) with Mormon settlers gave Native Americans an immediate reason to be waryr lands in Utah were seized. Five years later conflicts in Colorado lead to the seizure of the gold-rich lands promised by treaty.

This circa 1861 Alexander Gardner stereograph showing a women's militia is titled "the home guard" White Mountain Rangers. The image is thought to date to 1861 and may depict a militia mustered in the White Mountains of New Hampshire at the outbreak of the war.

Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This circa 1869 E. & H. T. Anthony stereograph shows "Three drummer boys (now at Ft. Hamilton) who have been in 9 battles of the rebellion ". Drummer boys were children recruited into the army well into the 19th century. The youngest person wounded in battle during the American civil war was drummer William Black. The youngest noncommissioned officer in US military history was also a drummer boy. John Clem was promoted to seargent at age twelve following the battle of Chickamauga. International law now sets the minimum age for a soldier at 15.

Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This 1873 Timothy H. O'Sullivan stereoview shows artist Alexander Helwig Wyant sketching Ancient ruins, Cañon de Chelle, N.M. During this expedition he suffered a stroke, likely after this image was taken. Learning to paint with his left hand entailed much of the next six years but he continued to paint until his demise in 1892.

The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This ninteenth century stereograph, by prolific image pirates Webster & Albee, looks north on Broad Street from city hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A very similar image, taken from the second or third floor of city hall in 1895, also shows the two-tiered horse-drawn bus. The role of this bus (or omnibus) is unclear, as such vehicles had largely been replaced by the horse-drawn streetcar (on rails) by the end of the Civil War.

The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This 1865 Sam A. Cooley image shows a woman walking past ruined houses in Savannah, GA. The dark cape over a light dress seems to be normal attire rather than mourning dress. The source stereograph is titled Savannah, Georgia. Ruins of houses. General Sherman's march to the sea, destroying infrastucture and property with a mobile army lacking supply lines, ended with the capture of Savannah. In his estimation only twenty percent "inured to our advantage" while the "remainder is simple waste and destruction."

The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This 1864 image by George N. Barnard shows a woman seated at the tomb of president James K. Polk. The source stereograph is titled Nashville, Tennessee. Tomb of President James K. Polk. The tomb was located on the grounds of Polk place, the retirement home fo the former president. At the time of this photo his wife Sarah Childress Polk (1803-1891) and an adopted daughter Sarah (Sallie) Polk Fall (nee Jetton, 1847-1924) were in residence. The family remained neutral during the war and were respectfully visited by both Confederate and Union officers.

The identity of this lady is uncertain. She seems too youthful to be the former First lady and does not wear the mourning black she adopted for the remainder of her life. Could this be an early portrait of Sallie? Judge for yourself by comparison with this photo or this portrait.

Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This July, 1864 image by Charles E. Meyer shows a woman in dark clothing walking through the ruins of Chambersburg PA. The source stereograph is titled North-West corner public square, Chambersburg, Franklin Co., Pa., destroyed by the rebels under McCausland, July 30th, 1864 . The third occupation of Chambersburg by confederate forces during the war resulted in burning much of the town when a demanded ransom was not paid.

Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This July, 1864 image by Charles E. Meyer shows a woman in dark clothing walking through the ruins of Chambersburg PA. The source stereograph is titled North-West corner public square, Chambersburg, Franklin Co., Pa., destroyed by the rebels under McCausland, July 30th, 1864 .
