Hereford Cathedral: misericord with bat carving.

During a recent trip exploring "hidden" Herefordshire we managed to revisit for the third time Hereford Cathedral. This was rewarded by finding an elusive Green Man (a roof boss in the north aisle) and by access to the misericords for the first time. Amongst the latter are fine carvings of another Green Man, a bat (something I haven't seen in such surrounds before) and the ubiquitous mermaid!

Some more fine church carvings visited on my recent trip to North Yorkshire. We were very lucky to see these: a sign on the gate at the small Norman church at Burton Agnes said it was closed for roof repairs. Fortunately, we arrived just as the workmen were clearing up after a few days work. They very kindly waited 10mins before locking the church to allow us to take a quick look! Churchcrawling is often rewarded with chance encounters with very helpful people! These Green Men or beasts are on a fine set of misericords. There is much more to see and explore here so a revisit in the near future is a must!

What a beautiful and fascinating church this is! After finding it closed on several recent visits, the welcome received this time was fantastic! A very knowledgeable and friendly guide was an added bonus and much appreciated! I will certainly have to re-visit as there is so much to see at St. Mary's. On this visit I concentrated mostly on the wonderful collection of misericords, roof bosses in the nave, aisles, chancel and vestry and external carvings. There is an absolutely fascinating collection of artifacts in the "priest's room" which made the visit well worth making on its own! The Green Man is everywhere in this church and I'm sure there are many I have missed...
