No idea what kind of fish this was, but it shot through the water just centimeters under the water surface. Being just 10 or 20 centimeters long it was hard to track goping up and down with every wave. But it was not as afraid of me as the squid we saw the other day, so taking a photo was quite a lot easier.

I would guess camouflage is the way to survive underwater but this fish and many others have a different strategy. They have flashy colorful skins which doesn't make them stealthy at all. I looks more like a cold war kind of thing: "Look at me and how impressive I am... Better not take a bite of me because...".

Damaged Coral Reef

These yellow funny rock-like structure appear to be damaged Elkhorn Coral. It is a fancy stone type of coral which can grow into beautifull structures quite a lot more impressive than this little hump.

Not far from the beach the ground here disappeared in a deep drop-off. The bottom could not be seen and was well over 30 meters deep.

While getting some air and rearanging my diving gear this quite big pelican landed just a few meters away from me on a pole. I just hoped he didn't fancy me as a snack ;-)

These are funny creature. I know they are not dangerous, but still it was a bit weird. First one of these fish came our way, then another and another and before long we were swimming between a small swarm of these fishes. They were not afraid at all of getting close to us.

So there we were swimming in the caribbean sea when suddenly I saw this shooting away from the corner of my eye. This squid was not that big and it proofed to be quite difficult getting a photograph. If I turned to look its way, it shot away... If I tried to get a little closer, it shot away even faster... But luckily I got one relative good shot and luckily the autofocus wasn't tricked by all the water in between!

To me the idea behind photography is to be able to show a part of the world or life not visible in the daily life of most people. I guess it's part of the adventurous explorer in me. Being able to go underwater to see exotic creatures is for a dream coming true.

Reef Balls in the Coral Reef

In November 1999 the island of Curacao was hit by hurricane Lenny which damaged the coral reef near Playa Proto Mari. These concrete reef balls are put here to restore the coral reef, but even more than ten years later, there is much work to do.
