I scanned this from a book which I bought solely for this image. It was so gorgeous, and I love finding illuminations of such quality. I then returned the book because, honestly, my bookshelves are tightly packed as it is!

Found on the Museum of Fine Arts' website. This is one of a pair of portraits that used to be on display there, but I haven't seen them for years. I love this piece and have been counting the days till they finish their renovations and put it back up. I miss it - the lovely delicate face, the austere black dress and the red hair against the turquoise background. Very lovely.

Cecilia Gallerani was the mistress of Ludovico Sforza. She was the subject of Leonardo da Vinci's painting "The Lady with an Ermine." During the painting of her portrait, she befriended Leonardo and he soon joined her inner circle of scholars, philosophers, and luminaries of Milan.

Cecilia was a brilliant young woman, and though she was but a teenager during her heyday, she was highly respected for her intellect. She was fluent in Latin, a gifted singer and musician, and also a highly praised poet.

After Ludovico got married to Beatrice D'Este, Cecilia continued to keep her apartments in Ludovico's castle.She was, after all, the mother of his son Cesare, born in 1491. In 1492 she married Ludovico Carminati. Cecilia Gallerani lived from 1473 to 1536.

The animal cradled in Cecilia’s arms is an ermine, a symbol of virtue and purity because it was thought to die if its white fur was stained. It may also be a play on Cecilia’s name, as the Greek word for ermine is galée, and a reference to Ludovico Sforza, who was appointed a member of the Order of the Ermine by Ferdinand I of Naples in 1488.

The formality of the image and elegance of the lady's costume link the painting to to the royal court in Madrid. The style of the costume dates to about 1630, but the only clue to her identity are the initials on her pendant: LVSS. Possible creators inculde Bartolome Gonzales and Roderigo de Villandrando.
