We wanted to try one of the 50s/60s -era motels in Gatlinburg, so we chose the Spruce Flats. It was within walking distance of the shops and had all the amenities we really needed.

Not exactly Paris-Las Vegas, but cozy and a great reminder of trips my folks took me on back in the 60s.

An economical, clean, friendly place close to the shops and attractions.

Who wouldn't be charmed by the Disney-like Fairy depicted in this fantastic, well-preserved old neon sign at Cherokee, NC's Pink Motel. It's near the NC entrance to Great Smoky Mountain National Park. (March, 2008)

This wide shot shows how inviting a nostalgic stay at Cherokee, NC's "Pink" Motel would seem, especially to baby boomers who remember road trips in the 50'a and 60's. Taken in March, 2008, the photo shows that the neon fairy looks as charming as ever.

On a less-traveled route leading to Cherokee, NC and the Great Smoky Mountains NP, we found this abandoned Motel that was once the cream of the crop. I really hope someone saves this remarkable sign.
