I have been having a very difficult time getting into the swing of things, artistically speaking, for some time now. Here is Attempt # 3 (WIP)... a small paper mache' box. The design lows down the sides and if it works out, may be fairly nice.
My inspiration was Klimt's painting "Judith" .... we'll see how it goes when I get to the cat, which should be tomorrow.
The interior sides are as of the moment, earthy red & i plan to line the bottom in puffy black Thai silk...
Wish me luck!

After months and months of no art projects, I've started on two "catboxes" using two of the handmade polymer clay cat faces from some months ago, paper created from photoshopping two of my cat paintings (from about 2004) which I hope to use to line the sides of the boxes along with little pewter "silk" cushions for the bottoms. I have no idea what I will do beyond that in terms of the boxes themselves or the faces.

May 1 Two Dollar Misadventure Part II

I haven't made much literal progress yet, though I've been thinking a lot about this "misadventure". I did dig out a few Asian coins and paper currency from the "if we ever go there again" jar. Downloaded a few images and printed them on tshirt paper in case I decide on using some transfers. This morning I was looking for a bit of linen I thought might work when instead I pulled out a couple of leather scraps which led to some burl veneer and then to the bits and pieces box and some discarded jewelry and set aside African necklaces of copper, malachite and ostrich eggshell trade beads.
The red Chinese stamp on top of the box in this photo is way out of scale, but for now that doesn't matter.

UPDATE ONE YEAR LATER: JUST DIDN'T WORK OUT.

April 26 2012 Two Dollar Misadventure?

I don't know why I do this to myself from time to time, but know I'm not the only one. I decided to share what might end up a huge misadventure.
Starting with a cedar cigar box, I coated the exterior with white glue, then when dry, painted a layer of cobalt blue and black as background.
Thinking I wanted to work in blues, I then laid on a series of curvilinear shapes using sculpey oriignal terra cotta clay, some mixed with turquoise sculpey III. (for box bases I often use these clays as they are less expensive and their structural qualities are not compromised on a strong wooden base. For subsequent layers, I use Primo)
I then cured the box. Looked at it for awhile and decided I didn't like it. I couldn't bring myself to toss the box. Why? The two bucks I'd paid for it weren't that important...it was the fact that it was a cedar box and I hated to waste it.
SO . . .I started to attempt to remove clay. Not fun. Then I realized if I heated it (10 min increments at 220) I found it reasonably easy to get the clay off. Then I scrubbed it with a wire brush. It really wasn't what I'd hoped for as far as texture went, but there was something about it that appealed to me, so I decided to let it rest awhile. Today, something came to me, so we'll see. This is where I start:

I am so pleased with this box, and as often happens in such cases, I've held onto it for a long time. I made it out of a white-ecru mix which I textured, then cut into I don't know how many narrow strips and covered the entire exterior, including the bottom. Once that was done, and the box cured, I sanded and buffed and then applied a glaze of raw sienna and burnt umber. A striped agate bead I especially liked was then fixed to the top, a narrow black bezel created and the piece was cured again to fuse the glaze and cure the clay bezel. I've left the interior natural to allow it to be used for proper cigar storage, and cut a removable dark brown suede piece for the base. The box is 5 3/4 inches long, 4 1/2 inches wide and 4 3/8 inches tall. The entire exterior of the box is covered, including the bottom. I have signed the underside of the lid.

Wonderful thunderstorm late Sunday afternoon. I was on the screened porch enjoying and reading. The rain stopped while I was engrossed in my book. I happened to look up and the light took my breath away.
Hard to capture the full glory of it all, but this comes reasonably close.
