Kafes, literally "the cage", was the part of the Imperial Harem of the Ottoman Palace where possible successors to the throne were kept under a form of house-arrest and constant surveillance by the palace guards.

The history of the Ottoman Empire is littered with succession wars between rival sons of the deceased sultan. It was common for a new sultan to have his brothers killed, including infants, sometimes dozens of them at once.

12th century mosaic: St. John the Baptist, The Deësis mosaic with Christ as ruler

In Byzantine art, a Deesis is a traditional representation of Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, imploring Christ the salvation of man. This mosaic in Hagia Sophia is located in the upper south gallery, dating back to 1261. It is considered to be a pioneer for the Byzantine art in Renaissance period with its soft tones, the intense humanity and the emotional realism on the faces of the figures.

Hagia_Sophia, from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Ayasofya, is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, turned into mosque by sultan Mehmet II, since 1931 a museum in Istanbul, Turkey.

From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the Greek Patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople of the Western Crusader established Latin Empire.

(2009) the byzantine mosaic was cleaned to reveal the face of the angel Seraphim, hidden and covered by ottomans for about 160 years, under layers of paint and a metalic masque

The six-winged seraphim make their first Christian appearance in the Book of Revelation iv. 6-8, where they are forever in God's presence and praising Him constantly: “Day and night they never stop saying: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.’”

These angels, said to be the caretakers of God's throne, belong to the highest order, or angelic choir, of the hierarchy of angels.

1453, after the Siege of Costantinople, by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II (also called Humkar - "bloodthirsty"), immediately ordered that christian church Hagia Sophia be turned into the "Aya Sofya Mosque". Crosses, bells, altar, iconostasis, sacrificial vessels, icons were removed and byzantine mosaics plastered over.

But as the apse did not face to Mecca, islamics added a mihrab located in the apse where the altar used to stand, pointing towards Mecca, also applied all around eight wooden medallions with quran inscriptions, placed in the four corners beneath the dome with names of prophets sultans caliphs; quranic inscriptions also on the frieze of blue tiles, a sultan lodge, a muezzin lodge, four minarets were erected at the corners of the exterior perimeter; a gilded bronze crescent replaced the cross crowning the basilica... such changes offended Christians

Byzantine Art is the torch-bearer of early Christianity and the symbol of the Eastern Empire. Byzantine Art was under the influences of classical and oriental cultures. From the foundation of Constantinople on the site of ancient Greek town of Byzantium by Constantine the Great in 330 to the fall of the city to the Turks in 1453, the Byzantine Art was the reflection of the glory of the Great Christian Empire.

The leading artistic centres of the Byzantine Art are Constantinople with its symbol, Hagia Sophia, San Marko in Venice with its treasures, the monasteries of St Catherine in Sinai, the Mount Athos in Greece and the monasteries of Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Russia.
