I took advantage of the extra pedestrian space afforded by the closed-off driving lane to taunt passing cars -- kicks and dances and pretend moonings etc.

Point at a driver then make an armpit-fart gesture then do a kick, that kind of thing.

I found this guywired young tree and these bubblewrapped bikeracks on the opposite side of this bright new sidewalk from that chainlinked residential bldg.

My understanding is that the workers haven't touched any of this for several months now. They left midproject what a shame.

Property is very expensive in Washington DC because of restrictions on building heights in the city, so I hadn't expected that there'd be unused land going to waste in the foregrounds of my pictures.

Sure, an open-sided dumpster enclosure like every building has, it's nothing special -- but look at that massive spew of cables up there!, cascading out from the building and sweeping upward into the sky.

The little concrete cylinder on the ground, I think it's meant to be a table to put your bottle of Mountain Dew on while you're lighting your cigarette?

It has pretended to shine on plenty enough gravel and asphalt since the civic pride dinner at which I assume it was unveiled too many years ago, and is due to be retired in my opinion.

I think that even if a freshly-printed photoillustration were to be installed the lighthouse would still look faded and stale because its plastic is so old.

In the small towns of the U.S. people have been thinking that their traditional ways of life -- which had been dependent on the "videotan" business model (combining UV tanning with VHS movie rental) -- are DOOMED because of changes nobody around here asked for. My understanding of the situation here in this flowerbed at the edge of a parking lot in downtown Clinton, Iowa, is that these are dark-leafed plants that are being strangled or smothered to death by parasitic vines.

And that the original landscapers didn't mean for that to happen. But maybe I'm wrong about that? Is there a branch of landscaping where people intentionally sic parasitic vines onto other kinds of plants, for the aesthetic effect.

Ah yes when with our styrofoam coffees we waited for the shadows cast by towering roadside signs to form tangencies to the curving pavement joints that parallel the islands of woodchips at the driveway of the East Peoria Motel 6.

This picture is a look back upon our visit to the East Peoria waterfront. Over there's the U.S. Coast Guard.

There's a "Steak 'n Shake" red sign along a roadside way back there in the distance, so yep, we definitely were still in the city.

I can remember commenting that it looked like somebody sure felt like they were gonna be needing a bunch of those red and green plastic objects gathered up over there, for something or other sometime.

Are they buoys.

Here's a method I saw for tending to the kind of situation where a lineup of shrubs separates a sidewalk from a parking lot. This one's in Peoria, Illinois.

The landscaper distinguished between the shrubs' street sides and parking lot sides, giving flattened sides to the former and rounded sides to the latter.

Yet these flattened shrubs cast rounded-looking shadows onto the sidewalk; it is a clever trick, an advanced idea in landscaping: Pedestrians are surprised to see the city's sharp edges become unexpectedly softened by the shadows they cast.

Sometime I hope to write about all this at greater length.

This was a big occasion!, about as big as things get for heartlanders in cities this size:

1) Sometime in the past (1980s-90s?), arrangements were made that ideas of simulations of urban-like settings would be installed; and, 2) as a finishing touch, there is nobody out walking around the area who isn't specifically required to be here in service of some assigned task.

Nobody can dispute that it's definitely the seventh-largest city in Illinois.

The squat structures in the foreground are pallets of compacted cardboard, parked out back of a Walmart. I guess two is all the higher people are allowed to safely stack these? I would be interested in learning more.

This seemed unusual and distinctive; I felt like I was in an unusual and distinctive area.

I don't know what in the hell kind of imagery typically enters into people's heads whenever they're told to think about North Carolina, but here might be a candidate for that kind of imagery if you need one. Think of these backsides of buildings in the morning.
