Laatst kreeg ik de vraag of ik mijn Flickr-pro-status wilde verlengen. Ik heb dit gedaan, dus het is dan logisch dat ik toch weer wat plaats.

Dit is een foto die ik heb gemaakt toen ik een locatie voor een opdracht aan voor-verkennen was.

Mijn oog viel op de driehoeken en ik was verkocht. :-)

Juul zag dat het goed was.

Afgelopen weekend was ik met gezin en/bij vrienden in Den Haag. Daar viel op dat in de wijk Ypenburg best wel wat aardigs te vinden is op architectuurgebied.

Vlak voor vertrek was de zon weer flink doorgekomen en kon ik het niet nalaten om toch nog wat tijd te nemen voor het Ypenburg Lyceum, ontworpen door DP6 architectuurstudio.

Dit gebouw trok voor mij de aandacht door de strak uitgevoerde metalen gevel en de kekke, gekleurde raaminzetten in geel, oranje en rood.

De foto's worden trouwens mede mogelijk gemaakt door dochter Juul, die het gebouw en vooral de pingpongtafel ook kon waarderen.

Last week I was at a nice evening event organized by the architecture magazine De Architect. Before the event started I had some time to take out my camera and take some photographs. I really like the evening light and the accompanying elongated shadows.

Currently I am working on an assignment where I have a vague outline of what I need to shoot. I have mixed feelings about this way of working. On one hand it is great, because I have a lot of freedom to choose what I think fits the assignment, on the other hand it takes a lot of searching to find what I am looking for.

It's not easy finding something, when you're not quite sure what to look for... sometimes it is nice to have some structure, but finding gems like this make it worth my while.

At 100% Design in Rotterdam this was my favorite part. This is a detail of a beautifully designed kitchen cabinet. This is only a small fragment, but this hinge makes sure that when the cabinet is open, the resulting face lays perfectly flat. As a designer I have a lot of respect for this solution and I find it looks nice as well.

On the 27th of May I visited 100% Design in the Van Nellefabriek in Rotterdam. One of the participants, Artifort, had a rooftop tea room with an exquisite view of the skyline of Rotterdam. I took a shot partially through one of the beautifully detailled single pane windows.

I took this shot a few weeks back, during my holiday to Austria, to the lovely town of Fieberbrunn, apparently the Geheimtipp in den Kitzbüheler Alpen. We walked to the Kogel where paragliders were taking off.

I have never tried this myself, but I think it must give an immense sense of freedom to go paragliding.

Same location as the previous shot, also in Almere. When I stood up on top and looked down I saw two girls lying in the sun, warming themselves. I was too self-conscious too shoot them from above, I was more comfortable with this angle.

When compared to the previous shot I love how that bike plays a different role.

Today I visited Almere, wanting to shoot some of the impressive architecture on the waterfront. The day was fairly overcast, but I still managed to get a few good shots.

I really liked this moment, with the man sitting and eating, sipping from his canned drink once in a while, seemingly oblivious of the architecture behind him.

We went out walking the other day. I have been shooting a lot of brickwork recently. It appears that little miss Juul is discovering the appeal of brickwork as well.

MVRDV | De Effenaar

Last week during the day of architecture I visited some projects. On my way to one of the locations I took some photographs of the De Effenaar, designed by MVRDV.

I have visited the poppodium on several occassions, but never got round to take any photographs.

Now I did, using the TS-E 17mm.

Eindhoven cityscape

For today, a friend invited me to fly along while he had his flying lesson. We were in luck, because the weather was good and the skies were clear. We mainly flew over Eindhoven and Helmond and were able to spot a lot of well known buildings.

Something completely different from what I usually shoot. I rented a 200mm prime for my visit to the zoo and shot the whole day with it. Refreshing to do this for a day. It's limiting but also challenging, because I needed to think differently about my framing. The benefit was, of course, that I had much more reach.

This is a sequence of full frames, no extra cropping, of a panther at feeding time. A piece of frozen meat, hung from a tree. You can see him pouncing it.

Shifting up the new public library

For a while now I have been meaning to take some photographs of the newly built public library in Helmond. During the build I have followed the developments in the vicinity of the cube houses by Piet Blom.

The library has been designed by Bolles+Wilson, it consists of 3 levels with a total floorplan of 4,200 m2. On the ground floor there is room for a reading cafe and commercial spaces. Both the first and second floor are for the library and on the second floor there is also space alotted for the Historical Information Center (Regionaal Archief).

I was commissioned by Edhv to take pictures for the website of BKRS Crane Systems, both of the exterior as well as the interior.

BKRS is very proud of their product and, in my opinion, rightfully so. As you can see by the size of the person grinding some steel, those beams are huge.

just a walk 'in' the park

Last week I shot some abstracts of these buildings in the evening, when the sun was setting. I wanted to shoot the buildings from this side as well. Today was a sunny, cloudless day. Perfect. I went this morning, together with my little girl. We walked in the park, she watched the ducks and I took the pictures.

I decided to do an extra-wide crop [21:9], because I want to have the emphasis on the buildings, in the centre of the frame, but also show the surroundings. A 16:9 or 3:2 crop would have shown too much shadow area in the foreground.
