This is not your typical Home Depot rack. And it's near the store entrance.

This makes me think that Home Depot didn't install it, but CDOT did.

Do bike parking well! Follow the three rules of Simple Bike Parking.

Bike racks must be at least 3 feet away from other obstructions, like this curb at the bottom of the wall. Also, note the corner: You can't park bikes on both racks at the same time. Thankfully, since a truck always blocks this area, no one will use it. They can use the Home Depot's "decorative" fence on the sidewalk, or the remaining parking meters.

As you can see, I cannot lock my bike the way this rack is intended because the curb prevents the proper positioning of the bike. Because of this rack's poor siting and installation, it may induce some cyclists to only lock the front wheel.

Frank attempts to park his bike at the South Loop Home Depot on Clinton, just south of Roosevelt (incidentally a next door neighbor to another bike parking scofflaw, Best Buy).

He just can't do it because a Home Depot rental truck is parked here (at all times when it's not being rented). If this truck is not parked here, usually a different motor vehicle is.

There is not enough room here to maneuver a bike into the proper locking position, with about 90% of the wheel on the opposite side of the rack than the rest of the bicycle.

Problem: This rack is too close to the curb.

This is the subpar bike parking area at the South Loop Home Depot, 1300 S Clinton St.

I have never seen anyone use this parking area (except for automobiles), and I visit this store at least once a month. Everyone locks their bikes to Home Depot's fencing.

Fortunately for cyclists, the Department of Revenue recently installed parking meters in front of the store, thus providing us a secure place to lock our bikes.

This error in spacing configuration is a problem on many private installations across the country. In many places, it's also a problem with public agency (like city departments of transportation) installations. The City of Chicago has well-defined and tested criteria and spacing design for bike parking installation.

Home Depot's insanely large parking garage

And the Best Buy being built next door will have its own insanely large parking structure.

Because of this we are inviting suburban-style park and shop behaviors: Park at one store, buy your stuff, drive and park in front of another store and buy more stuff.

However, in the suburbs, you drive from store to store because the distance between stores as well as the quality of street amenities prevent reasonable people from walking store to store. In the city, you can only park where you buy things and you're not allowed to leave the store without your car - you'll get towed if you park in front of a store where you're not going to shop.

New Home Depot has bike racks

The new Home Depot in the sorta South Loop area of Roosevelt and Canal has two bike racks.

Side note: I see this entrance of the store as a traffic problem. I see so many cars wanting to get in here that they will block the sidewalk and line up on the street.

I didn't get a photo of the main entrance (this is not it), but I know the store expects most people to enter from the parking lot on the roof.

Cartographica (Mac only) doesn't allow you to move or reposition labels (that I can tell). This creates for more confusing maps.
