Dutch Reformed Church in the village of Franschhoek. The first chapel was built in Franschhoek in 1833 and had the services of a travelling preacher. A smoke signal was sent up on a neighbouring farm to let the congregation know the service was taking place. Today, the village has the use of the 1847 Dutch Reformed church. An awe inspiring building, built in Neo-Gothic style and in the shape of the Greek cross. (view LARGE)

The Great Synagogue, Gardens Shul, or Cape Town Hebrew Congregation, which was consecrated in 1905, is the oldest active congregation in South Africa and is located just to the right of the first synagogue and now, the Jewish museum. The Gardens Shul is an “Egyptian-revival-style house of worship” that currently seats over 1,400.
