Nishihama Beach, Hateruma Island, Okinawa, Japan

Hateruma Island is located at the southern end of the Japanese Archipelago, 60km north of the Tropic of Cancer and 460 km southwest of Okinawa Main Island. Hateruma island was formed by raised coral reef. The population of the island is about 600 and the sugar cane farming is the island's main industry.

Hateruma Island belongs to the Yaeyama Island group which boasts of paradisical beaches, untouched tropical rainforests, lush mangrove rivers and one of the world's largest coral reef systems.
Those islands are also known as one of the world's best diving destinations, having a number of coral species and marine lives as large as those in the Great Barrier Reef. (Over 400 types of corals, 5 types of sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks and all kinds of tropical fish species all live around Okinawa.)

Kabira Bay on Ishigaki Island is one of the best scenic spots in Okinawa and selected as 100 famous views in Japan.

March this year in Tokyo has been having many days over 20C/68F (some days even over 25C/77F) so Japanese cherry blossoms reached full bloom 10 days earlier than usual year!

We are often asked why Japanese people love cherry blossoms so much.
Japanese native cherry blossoms (Somei Yoshino) bloom only for one week and Japanese people love fleeting things; things that last for a very short period of time. These Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms bloom around the time of the year when fleeting life-marking events happen, such as graduation ceremonies and company/school entrance ceremonies.
It's a nostalgic time of the year for Japanese who connect fleeting cherry blossoms and the fleeing events of their own lives.
Above all, Japanese people just love sitting under the cherry trees and getting drunk.

In other parts of Palau, we saw some super tall Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) which can be twice taller than those we saw on Iriomote Island of southern Japan.
