this is a more unknown project by Erich Mendelsohn and his ONLY residential colony he ever planned and realised.

In 1919 he designed for his Friend Herrmann (same client for the legendary cap fabric in Luckenwalde which was realised a bit later) a colony for the fabric workers: Alltogether 300 houses (double houses and row houses), but for some reasons just 6 double and 4 row houses were realised. Also the houses were very very simple, just the strong and different colors were something special (like Bruno Taut did at the same time). In the time of b/w images nobody could imagine this colored walls which was the main reason for Mendelsohn not to publish this project in his life.

This image shows one of the double houses in the Upstallweg. the left part is not original as also of course all the windows/ doors etc.

Each house has just 66m2. By taking this images one owner was inviting me to see the house from the inside:

1st floor: entrance = stair to 2nd floor in the very compact entrance "hall" followed directly by the living room and the kitchen in the back (strange). from the kitchen you enter the bath rooom which has almost the same m2 as the kitchen (strange too). 2nd floor: 2 bed rooms and another bath room.

one more ( and after this - one more - ) image from the IG Metall house in Berlin-Kreuzberg. now i am on the staircase - looking straight to the last floor - captured with my eyes the last part of the free hanging lamp which is going down some 16 meters ( i can't tell exactly for the moment). THIS is a lamp. quite an original. the lamps says in this space: i am the princess of it!

one more interior shot from this project. I like this one, because of the reflection of the staircase and the lamp in the glass and it shows in the real way the shining brass of the doors. these entrances on each floors are not straight, they are a bit curved.

note: in the back (glass reflection) you might see the Jewish Museum.................

well: i am standing on the first steps looking in direction to the entrance hall and everything is in symmetry.

Like a head from an alien with some golden eyeglasses.
