Frederic Remington (1861-1909) knew how to sculpt horses and riders. This Mountain Man (1903) is in the Santa Bárbara Museum of Art, as well as in several other musea.
The entire bronze statue can be seen in this photograph.

The sculpture darkly reflects the rest of the art in SBMA’s exhibition “Myth and Materiality: Latin American Art from the Permanent Collection, 1930-1990”, from which I recently posted a few works.

A rear view of Francisco Zúñiga’s Desnudo Agachado (1969, onyx) is circled by Rogelio Polesello’s Multiplicador (1971, Plexiglas®). I know I posted a similar picture before, but I could not resist adding this one, and if I drop by the museum again before this exhibit closes, I may even take a couple more...;-)

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), the most fashionable English portrait painter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sure made these children and their dog look life-like. The faces remind me of Rubens (1577-1640), though the boy does look quintessentially English... They are the children of William Samuel Best, second Baron Wynford (1798-1869).

Looks quite acceptable for ISO1600, I think.

A Unique Work of Art?

In the early 1960s, Rogelio Polesello (Buenos Aires, 1939- ) began making optical paintings and plexiglass works. Multiplicador (1971) belongs to a series of Plexiglas® panels embedded with concave and convex lenses. In these works, the artist seeks to challenge the notion of the unique art object. Although the lenses are fixed, the work is constantly in flux depending on the position of the viewer and the placement of objects around it.

When I last visited the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden, there were some sculptures being exhibited there, on loan from the Morris B. Squire Art Foundation. This one is called “Joy.”

After Rotterdam, Antwerp, London, Bergen, Copenhagen, Milan, Singapore, etc., the city of Hasselt, Belgium recently participated in the Elephant Parade project, which seeks to attract public awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation. Coming to the USA next year (Dana Point, California).
This elephant, named “Phu Ka Dung”, was decorated by Chaiya Wanlert, who wrote: “Nature inspires everything I have created. Even the colour, texture, shadows and shades I have seen are all amaze me with their beauty. It is the beauty which is subjected to my art pieces. The beauty of nature, the beauty of ‘Phu Ka Dung’.”

Sure, I thought of other titles, such as “Size Doesn’t Matter”, when I saw L'air by Aristide Maillol taking the measure of Charles Ray’s Boy with Frog, but Jim Stafford’s song Spiders and Snakes beat all competition...

When I spotted this painting at the Santa Bárbara Museum of Art, I immediately recognized Severin Roesen, whose work I had seen before in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
He is pretty good with fruit, especially grapes. There are several other paintings of his on Flickr.

Denis Diderot (1713-1784) wrote about this painting: «Cette petite blanchisseuse qui, penchée sur sa terrine, presse du linge entre ses mains, est charmante; mais c’est une coquine à laquelle je ne me fierais pas.» She does look a little too dressed up for the job...;-)

Soaring in Stone

The late sculptor Carlyle T. Montgomery (1947-1998) donated this life-sized sculpture of a California condor and a young man (on the other side) to the Ojai Valley Museum. The bird has a wingspan of 10 ft. (roughly 3m) and is made of Belgian fossilized limestone. The head is made of local red serpentine.

We all know John Deere — Nothing Runs Like a Deere™... — but I had never heard of John Deare, the English sculptor (1785-1787), until this marble plaque caught my eye at the Getty Center. The title is Venus Reclining on a Sea Monster with Cupid and a Putto.
Dimensions are 1'1¼" x 1'11" x 4 7/16" (34 x 59 x 11cm).

The gentleman in the straw hat portrayed his three daughters year after year so we saw them grow up at i Madonnari. Now that they are all grown up, they were not available to model, but one of them dropped by to help dad.
