Green River Overlook at Sunset - Canyonlands National Park Utah

I had set up to take sunset photos at Green River Overlook after the hike out from False Kiva. The temps were rapidly getting cooler with the setting of the sun, and as I turned to the North after photographing the glow of the canyon walls to the Southwest, I find a couple silhouetted against the colorful sky and so I shot rapidly to capture this moment of them taking in the beauty of the Green River Canyon 1500 ft below.

Can you spot Fort Bottom on top of the short mesa about a mile away?
The Fort Bottom Ruin is located in a horseshoe bottom of the Green River on top of a mesa with 360 degree views, one way in and one way out.
The hike leads from here on the South side of the first mesa around to the right onto the North side of the first mesa, then down the 400 ft drop of switchbacks to the white rock level. Next, across the narrow connecting white rock, then around the North side of the second mesa, and then 400-500 ft of switchbacks up to the top of the second mesa where the Fort Bottom Ruin is located.

Fort Bottom - Canyonlands National Park

dsphotoscapes posted a photo:

After driving down the Mineral Bottom Road 12.9 miles, down the switchbacks, descending 1500 ft into the canyon I arrived at Mineral Bottom. I turned left and a couple miles later entered Canyonlands NP on the White Rim Road on the banks of the Green River. Continuing 4.5 miles further in 4x4 on the unmaintained White Rim Road through very deep sand and up the canyon walls on narrow cliff edges my wife and I arrived at Fort Bottom for the 1.5 mile hike each way to and from Fort Bottom. The hike involves 400-500 ft elevation change twice in 1.5 miles. The last assent to Fort Bottom on top of the mesa proved difficult for my long legs but easier for my wife who was able to bend her legs and go up facing the wall. I had to turn my back to the wall and go up backwards. We met two guys about halfway who were hiking out who remarked "What were they thinking when they built that up there."
I replied, "There is a whole lot of 'What were they thinking out here."
Fort Bottom is a double tower connected with a small crawl through from the small to the large tower.
The hike took 3 hours with photo taking.
The drive out from Fort Bottom to Mineral Bottom took 1:15, and another hour back to the top of the canyon to the pavement....so an 8 hour day to hike Fort Bottom.

False Kiva - Canyonlands National Park, UT. This is a 21 shot merge in photoshop.....A new fav, right?
A wonderful hike of 3 miles round trip and about 1100 ft elevation change each way leads to False Kiva if you know where to go because it is not on the map! This is a Class II Archeological site and they are trying to keep traffic down. However, you can tell it is much more visited today than three years ago when I made my first trip there. The Spirit of Place there is strong.

Chaco - Pueblo Bonito

dsphotoscapes posted a photo:

This was at Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Culture National Historical Park right before the clouds opened up and ran us out of there.
Chaco is about 30 miles off of US 550 and the last 2/3rd of that is on washboard dirt road which crosses a couple of washes and becomes impassible when wet.
From Pueblo Bonito, we went back to the visitor's center and I requested to see the radar....the young park ranger said they had no radar. So I asked if that computer was connected to the INTERNET...and was told it was connected. So I directed the young ranger to google: NOAA National Mosaic, and click on the link found....and there it was, the National Weather Service Radar!!! Imagine the ranger's surprise! then click on the loop and it goes into motion, and click on your region of the country and it zooms in, and click on the area on the map where you're located and it zooms in to the Local Radar Loop for your area!!! Amazing huh?
So, upon examination of the radar loop, we could see the storms were intensifying, and so we headed back to Bloomfield and the comfort of the Airstream.
Two days later we ventured to the Bisti Badlands Wilderness which has a wash running through it, one of the same washes that must be crossed to go to Chaco...and that one had run up to 6 feet deep through the Bisti Badlands....
Yup, better pay attention to the clouds when you're out there off the pavement.
Anyway, Chaco was the cultural center of the Puebloan people back in about 700-1100 AD....so these buildings are at least 1000 years old and are laid out exactly to the stars, sun, and moon with regard to equinox and solstices and their movements through the seasons.
This is simply an AMAZING place!

Chaco - Pueblo Bonito

The Needles District is a little more remote than Island in the Sky, and provides a completely different experience.
This is Wooden Shoe Arch for obvious reasons. We were there in March, 2009 and it was quite warm 1500 ft lower than Island in the Sky. I can't imagine hiking there middle of Summer unless I had a death wish.

Close examination will reveal a Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel on the foreground rocks. Taken in August, 2006, shortly after sunrise. The Washer Woman Arch is the rock formation that appears to be of a woman with her hands in the sink.
.... the large version is better so click all sizes above to get a close look for the squirrel!

The Zion Narrows is an amazing place.
I think I like this photo better than the earlier one posted.
The narrows are only 18 ft wide in places with cliffs towering 2700 ft. above you.
This prints 62 x 67 inches in maximum size.
