Another day is coming to an end on the playa and the sun is setting over the mountains. The day may be fading fast but the city is about to come alive. Most of us hunker down during the day and seek whatever shade we can secure in order to avoid the heat. Once the sun drops over the horizon we awaken from our slumber like vampires and journey out into the expanse of desert looking for whatever Burning Man means to us at that particular moment. You see, to some Burning Man is a spiritual journey. To others it's a giant party in the desert. To others it's simply a place where they feel free enough to express themselves. It's a different place to everyone and it can be all of these things and more over the course of a single week. Some people return year after year expecting that same buzz they got the first time they ventured into these barren lands only to find that the event has changed, or they have.

I almost deleted this shot in-camera but decided to let it live until I could see it bigger. I am glad that I saved it because I really like the way it turned out.

This shot was taken in Half Moon Bay, CA at the Half to Have It antique shop. The outside of the store is fascinating and a photog's dreamscape. The ground is completely covered in broken glass and ceramic in a myriad of colors. To top it off the place is also littered with antique "junk" in a post-modern commentary on Sanford & Son. It's awesome! You'd love it.

I don't know what this is, what it symbolizes, what it's called or why it makes me think of vampires.

Here I was, standing in the basilica of the Carmel Mission just minutes before a full-scale Catholic wedding marched through the doors with my tripod fully extended in a tiny hallway setting up for this shot. What was funny was all of the people trying to frame the same image with their iPhones, point-and-shoot and a couple of dSLR's Not sure what they were thinking but shooting in conditions this dark almost always will need tripod or an extremely high ISO. I didn't bother to tell them this.

On a clear day you see hundreds upon hundreds of the power-generating windmills strewn about the hilltops above the San Luis Reservoir in Central California. The western half of Pacheco State Park is off-limits to the public because the government has decided to lease the public land to the private power companies. I don't have a problem with the placement of the windmills or the leasing of the land (as long as a percentage of the profit is going back into the park system) but I am adamantly opposed to keeping half of this park off-limits to the public simply because there are windmills there...

Coral Pink Sand Dunes - Southern Utah

During the summer months I am certain that there would be a band of merry marauders on all sorts of off-road vehicles using this sand dune as a sort of natural launching platform. I, however, was able to visit this section of planet during the winter months and there was not another soul to be seen for miles--with the exception of the Park Ranger a couple of miles away at the headquarters. I hiked out across the sands and up this dune trudging along with camera and tripod in hand and came back with this shot. I hope you like it.

Looking back at where I came from to get the other dune shot. It is nearly a mile back to my car and walking on this sand dune is not an easy task at all. In fact, you can see how short my stride is in this shot and that is not because I am short; it's because it is difficult to traverse. Every step is like taking two. I persevered and captured the sand dune shot before continuing along on my journey.
