heh, the "wrapping" was probably a better present than the _actual_ present hidden within. With all the gold and the fancy-schmancy top this is probably the showy-est origami boxes I've ever made.

A beautiful handmade giftbox, made with christmas colors seeming to sparkle right across the paper - but how to put a nametag label on? A sticker would just ruin the thing. Luckily my brain is very good at thinking unusual thoughts. A toothpick! With a paper label wrapped around the top and the bottom carefully inserted between two folds. It worked! Sometimes it pays to be weird.

I did not have instructions for either the pentagonal or heptagonal boxes, but the instructions I had for the hexagonal and octagonal boxes were essentially identical except for the angle of a single crease. I guessed that the same instructions could also be used to produce the other two boxes by making that single change. I could easily figure out what angle would be needed for the pentagonal and heptagonal shapes, but figuring out how to create a fold at that angle without using a protractor - merely using additional folds to the paper - took a bit more thinking. But in the end I triumphed!

I created pdf instruction files for the pentagonal and hexagonal boxes so that viewers could compare two sets of instructions and see for themselves how similar they were. I put a lot of time and effort into making the instructions as clear and explicit as possible so that even a complete novice could follow them easily. I took photographs of every step of the folding-in-progress, and used photoshop to add extra information (circles around specified points, red lines indicating fold lines, etc) in several spots. I did not, however, put a lot of time and effort into making the pdf files visually pleasing. In general I put each instruction, with photo(s), on a separate page, so there's a fair deal of empty white space. But what the documents lack in formatting, they more than make up for in detail. They are certainly more detailed than any other instructions I have seen for the hexagonal model or similar models. I started out with plain white paper and painted all of it with a light coating of tan paint. I cut out the squares I would need for the project, and then created a pattern on half of the lid papers using a largish stamp to apply dark brown paint, as you can see above.

I'd seen some very lovely origami tessellations made out of vellum-like paper, so that then end product (esp. when help up to a window) would be "see-through": you could see folded parts of the paper that were underneath the surface, which would be hidden if the paper was opaque. I decided to try incorporating some lightly-frosted translucent (but not completely transparent) paper into my work, not using it as the only material for my origami, but rather trying out new ways of incorporating it into my origami. This was my first experiment. I used spray glue to adhere the vellum to some of the pieces of the yellow rag paper. You could still see the yellow coloring of the paper through the vellum, but the color was more muted. This was what I was expecting. But the vellum covered sheets of paper actually differed from their uncovered counterparts in quite a few more ways than that as well. Just looking at the piece you can tell that the texture would be "smooth" as opposed to to the uncovered rag, which, if you ran your fingers over it, you would feel that it was irregular - it would feel fibrous and soft, not stiff and slick. Also, another difference (one you can't see in this particular image) is that the parts covered in vellum will reflect light (albeit mutedly), whereas the rag will not.

Overall I think it was a very successful first experiment, though it was hard to manipulate the thicker sheets of layered paper on such a small scale, so in the future I might want to experiment on a larger scale.

I made this as a gift for my friend John. I chose the paper because it had fleur-de-lis designs on it, and John more often French than not (one of those weird dual-citizenship people *grin*). HOWEVER, I did not like how vivid and bright the color was. So I worked it over with some charcoal, applied by pressing the long edge to the paper rather than the tip of the stick, then of course I had to spray it with fixative (Utrecht is my favorite brand) and, well yeah, that's the story behind this 'un.

after a prolonged interlude of no boxes, the prodigal artist returns to the medium, spurred to action by the discovery that NASA's birthday was fast approaching and I needed to make him a gift pronto. I asked him to choose the number of sides (any integer between 3 and 8 inclusive) and 1 or 2 colors. He gave me the surprising response of "chartreuse" and this green was as close as I had to being that... um, "striking" let's call it.

I like it: it's a christmas wreath made abstract and geometric, simple but striking. Despite the work involved I plan to do several more in smaller sizes to hang on the tree as ornaments.

Regarding the work, it's not bad SO LONG AS you have someone to chat with or some music to sing along to or SOMETHING to do other than be a one-person assembly line. I do a lot of modular origami, but I can't really recall if I ever made a piece with more than 20 identical units before - and you memorize the folds so quickly that you start making the modules without having to really think about it, so you have to have another source feeding thoughts into your brain.
