International Day of Radiology

Today marks the first-ever International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2012). The event is an initiative by the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR), and was established to build awareness in regards to the value of radiology and the important role that radiologists play in healthcare.

The International Day of Radiology falls on November 8, which marks the day in 1895 that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays. A total of 56 radiology-related societies in Europe will take part in the International Day of Radiology, each with their own unique activities. In North America, a further 21 societies will also take part in the event.

"The USA PATRIOT Act (commonly known as the "Patriot Act") is an Act of the U.S. Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. The title of the act is a ten letter acronym (USA PATRIOT) that stands for: Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required (to) Intercept (and) Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001.

The act, a response to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, dramatically reduced restrictions on law enforcement agencies' ability to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records; eased restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expanded the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and broadened the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. Cet événement marque le début de la Grande dépression, la plus grande crise économique du XXe siècle. "Le samedi 10 octobre 1970 à 18 h 18, Pierre Laporte est enlevé devant sa résidence de Saint-Lambert par des membres de la Cellule Chenier du Front de libération du Québec (FLQ). Son enlèvement survient cinq jours après celui du diplomate britannique James Richard Cross. Des négociations entre un avocat mandaté par le gouvernement du Québec, Me Robert Demers et celui des felquistes, Me Robert Lemieux, ne mènent à aucun résultat concret. Le 16 octobre, le gouvernement canadien impose la Loi des mesures de guerre et envoie les forces armées patrouiller les rues de Montréal.

Le 17 octobre, le FLQ émet un communiqué à la station de radio montréalaise CKAC 730 dans lequel il annonce la mort du ministre. Le journaliste Michel Saint-Louis se rend dans un terrain vague à proximité de l'aéroport de Saint-Hubert. Le corps de Pierre Laporte a été retrouvé dans le coffre d'une voiture de marque Chevrolet.

C'est donc après sept jours de séquestration que Pierre Laporte est retrouvé sans vie. Les médias font écho au rapport d'autopsie qui conclut à la mort par strangulation, ce que confirmera le procès. La version alternative des événements, d'après les membres de la cellule Libération, évoque la mort accidentelle du ministre, suite à une tentative d'évasion.

Pierre Laporte est enterré au Cimetière Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, à Montréal, le 20 octobre 1970."

"On 10 October 1970, Laporte was kidnapped from his home on Robitaille Street in Saint-Lambert, Quebec by the Chénier Cell of the FLQ. They dubbed him the "Minister of Unemployment and Assimilation," and held him hostage in an anti-government protest because his kidnappers wanted "political prisoners" to be freed.

Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau invoked Canada's War Measures Act which allowed mass raids and arrests to take place in order to find Laporte's kidnappers. Trudeau said:

* "Nothing that either the Government of Canada or the Government of Quebec has done or failed to do, now or in the future, could possibly excuse any injury to either of these two innocent men. The gun pointed at their heads have FLQ fingers on the trigger. Should any injury result, there is no explanation that could condone the act. Should there be harm done to these men, the Government promises unceasing pursuit of those responsible." (Trudeau's use of the word "men" referred to Laporte and James Cross, a British diplomat who was kidnapped on October 5 and eventually released on December 3.)

On October 17, just seven days after he went missing, Laporte's body was found. His kidnappers were subsequently captured and sentenced to long prison terms for his murder, but only served terms ranging from 7 to 11 years.

The events of October 1970 galvanized support against violence in efforts for Quebec sovereignty and highlighted the movement towards political means of attaining greater autonomy and independence, including support for the sovereigntist Parti Québécois, which went on to form the provincial government in 1976."

Le 22 septembre, c'est la journée internationale sans voitures.

Je dénonce ici les lobbys des fabricants automobiles qui ont pendant des années forcé les gens à acheter des voitures en démantelant des systèmes de transports en commun.

Aujourd'hui, c'est un peu plus subtil. Avec nos banlieues aux trottoir dérisoires, avec les nouveaux centres d'achats-parking, on n'a pas fini d'écoper.

Les initiatives comme la journée sans voiture sont là pour nous faire penser à des moyens d'améliorer notre mode de vie.

I here denounce the automotive lobby which forced prople to buy their cars for years, by demantling mass transits.

today, it's a bit more subtle. With our pathetic sidewalks suburbs, and the new parking shopping malls, we're not out of this mess.

The activities like the Day without cars are there to make ourselves think about ways to better our way of life.

"Les missiles V2 (ou fusées A4) sont les premiers missiles balistiques opérationnels et les véritables « prototypes » des premiers lanceurs de l'ère spatiale. On August 20, 1986, in Edmond, Oklahoma, U.S. Postal employee Patrick Sherrill guns down 14 of his co-workers and then commits suicide.

"Patrick Henry Sherrill (November 13, 1941 – August 20, 1986) was a United States Postal Service employee who, on August 20, 1986, in Edmond, Oklahoma, killed 14 employees with two .45 caliber pistols at his work place before turning one of the guns on himself and committing suicide. Six other employees were wounded. Security expert Gavin de Becker said that postal authorities ignored numerous signs of Sherrill's unstable and hostile attitude.

Sherrill was a relief carrier who would work routes on different days. He was making delivery errors and frequently delivered mail later than the customers were used to getting it. On the afternoon of August 19, 1986, Sherrill was reprimanded by two supervisors in a glassed-in office.

Shortly after 8am the next morning, he began the rampage by shooting one of the two supervisors who had spoken to him the previous day. The other supervisor had, for the first time ever, overslept and was an hour late to work, by which time the shootings were already underway. The second victim was Mike Rockne, grandson of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne. Fourteen people died during the attack, and six others were wounded. Some of the wounded survived because they played dead. The incident lasted between 15 and 20 minutes.

The incident is credited with inspiring the American phrase "going postal"."
