(Taken from the Municipal Wharf ) Santa Cruz..... on the Pacific coast 110 kms south of San Francisco. Its boardwalk, along the Santa Cruz Main Beach, dates back to 1865 & is known as the "Coney Island of the West". Its famous vintage carousel (below ), built in 1911, celebrated 100 years this year & has been designated a national historic landmark, along with the fair's 85 year old Big Dipper. The quiet town itself, with its attractive historical buildings, seems to have become a primary destination for transient youth which the municipality is non too happy about. Had a great lunch at Patti's favourite side-walk cafe on main street, though can't recall its name.

ana_lee_smith posted a photo:

this lesser marble copy stands outdoors in Piazza della Signoria, Florence's central
square, in front of Palazzo Vecchio, in the exact spot the original stood for 350 years.

Seeing michaelangelo's "david" in the Galleria della Accademia was perhaps the most stunning art experience of my life. Got heart palpitations in the first moments of seeing him as I entered the gallery in which he is showcased. Pearly white marble, 17 ft tall, raised even higher on a tall dais, he stands under a frosted glass dome bathed in natural light. The ultimate example of the Renaissance man, he radiates both the innocence of youth & the wisdom of maturity. The sculpture's physical beauty seems perfection. That michaelangelo had no model as he worked on it for 18 months is astounding. Commissioned in 1501, it stood outdoors in Palazzo della Signoria, Florence's central square, for over 350 years before being moved into the museum. Struck by lightening, attacked by rioters, toes & left arm broken in the revolt of 1527, it has survived in all its glory. I wish that you all have the opportunity to view it some day.
But tribal culture among the youth of today's society is a big subject & I havn't got my thoughts together on it, & likely won't before I leave for England so...I just leave her with you.

Haight / Ashbury, San Francisco's most famous crossroads, centre of the hippie movement & the Beat generation of the early '60's. Nothing much appears to have changed in the 50 years since. The strip of Haight Street from Masonic to Golden Gate Park entrance is rife with atmosphere, teeming with psychedelic murals, graffiti, peace signs, anti-war slogans, recycled record shops, tie-dye & vintage clothing stores (even the Goodwill sells only vintage). You'll find anarchist book stores, head shops filled with drug paraphenalia, body-piercing & tattoo places, retro movie houses & an abundance of coffee houses & cool cafes. Nary a Starbucks or McDonalds in sight. Hallelujah!

ana_lee_smith posted a photo:

this lesser marble copy stands outdoors in Piazza della Signoria, Florence's central
square, in front of Palazzo Vecchio, in the exact spot the original stood for 350 years.

Taken in Ricoleta Cemetary, Buenos Aires, an oasis of incredibly beautiful mausoleums
& sculptures. Like this one. But her youth & beauty & innocence also remind that there are many ways that a child's development can be cut short. Not by death alone. Great trauma in childhood can steal innocence, obliterate trust, arrest emotional maturity, create an internal defence mechanism that is its own prison.
There is more than one way of turning to stone.......
Protect your children, my friends. Never forget for a single moment that they are vulnerable.

The hands of a young boy, perhaps 15, sitting on a wall in The Peace Garden playing cards on Sunday afternoon. I was first attracted by the boldness & brilliance of his multiple bracelets then noticed the serenity he was carrying in his body language & beautiful face.As you can see here, he had a small tattoo on his right index finger, also another small one on the back of his neck & blond streaks in his hair. In this age of troubled urban youth it was a joy to observe his peaceful aura in this most appropriate setting.
