Madonna & Child, The Whole Series. A film by Mary Bogdan.

Madonna & Child, The Whole Series. A film by Mary Bogdan.

To see this short film just click here.

A video presenting the whole series of the current works by Mary Bogdan, entitled Madonna & Child, Or Re-Parenting My Inner Child, which deals with the theme of change or the hope of change. The artist addresses the issue of personal evolution in her own unique way through her encounter with the creative process. Within the moments of incidental illuminations that occur along the way, she discovers hope for metamorphosis, leading to transformation and ultimately, transcendence.

The work involves the recycling, recovery, manipulation and alteration of “found” objects and demonstrates the pursuit of reinvention of self, of an approach to life or a way of being. It addresses the shaping of the self through the creation of art, both on a personal and collective level. The work looks at inner struggles and seeks a better understanding of self and its place in our society. It portrays a quest for healing – a way to undo the past or, at least, to understand the present and invent a better future.

Madonna&ChildThis subject and the whole series, in general, came about subconsciously when I realized that all of the individual pieces in this first series on paper, possessed a recurring theme... Madonna & Child (from master paintings). When casually asked by my husband Sol Lang which one I was... Madonna? OR Child?, I perhaps should have said Madonna (mother/woman), but instead, I realized that I in fact had identified more with the child in each of these pieces. I was the child. This was the catalyst which started me thinking about what was going on.... and I began a new series (of prints this time) that also touches this theme, but now I brought in a deeper understanding, which included myself both as mother and (inner) child. I completed a series of ten prints and later a second series of ten. Also in the works, is a video on the subject.
I'm uploading again a second time, because I'm proud of it, and love to share it with you, and I'm a little wounded... hurts so bad. Could someone have called it "offensive"? What the hell happened?

I've just published my first book... about my art.

A comprehensive 76 page retrospective of selected works by painter and assemblage artist Mary Bogdan, featuring 140 works of art, including combine paintings, works on paper, assemblages and limited edition prints. In the best tradition of the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol.

Mary Bogdan is a gleaner… In scrap heaps of abandoned or demolished buildings, alleyways and flea markets, she finds rare treasure. Garbage. Remnants of wood and metal, books, boxes, old paintings, all that have been discarded are interesting to her.

Her work deals with obsolescence. Each “found” object has out-lived its time and has therefore been scrapped. Dead. Mary rescues and assembles them with collected items from her own past. She senses the object’s energy guiding its reincarnation to a higher purpose. Art.

Mary's unique mixed media works tells stories of passion and anger, strength and weakness, love, hate and fear.
Kind of like interestingness, but more spontaneous. Just next to an on-going garage sale, in a pile of garbage, which the owner had decided no one would want, were her discarded paintings. BUT, she was mistaken... about no one wanting them... My keen eye caught the stash as I was driving home one Saturday afternoon, car full with my husband and in-laws. We stopped the car picked up all the thrown-out canvases (of course, I did ask permission), filled up my SUV and drove home in a happy hurry... my father-in-law sitting in the back seat with canvases on his lap. My mother-in-law aghast.

Vernissage night... the opening at Sandra Goldie's Gallery, Montreal, November 2005.

This is a selection of the many photos taken by my husband photographer Sol Lang. It was a great busy night, and a phenomenal turn out considering it was a snowy, stormy Thursday night out in Montreal.

I was particularly touched by the flickrits that came that night, and what a treat to finally meet them... thanks guys.

>In this photo: Me with my younger son, Jonathan.
