Darwen Spitfire Memorial

The Darwen Spitfire Memorial was donated to the town by Stephen Hartley`s company the WEC Group.

The memorial commemorates the V R7219 "Borough of Darwen" fighter plane bought by the people of Darwen during the Second World War and is a lasting reminder of the town`s contribution to the War Effort.

A fund to buy the original plane for the RAF was launched in the town in September 1940 by Coun. John Gregory and the people of Darwen managed to raise the sum of £ 5707 in less than four months, an outstanding achievement in those difficult times.

The Darwen Spitfire V R7219 was accepted into service on the 28th March 1941 and allocated to 92 Squadron. It saw a considerable amount of action during its service before it went mising on the 14th July 1941 during a bomber escort operation over the north of France.

The memorial was unveiled in November 2012 and is located very close to the town centre.

The end result of a car impact has resulted in the front wall being "moved" by 40mm and the frontage badly damaged. Underneath where the fascia sign was there is now visible the old Co-Operative shop sign. I guess this is one of the dangers of having a "corner shop" on a busy road :-0

Just trying out the panorama setting on my Fuji compact - this is about 75 % of the original image as I cropped out the right hand side. Used a tripod and results are ok if a bit distorted !

Comet Group was an electrical retail chain in the UK, latterly owned by OpCapita. The company sold consumer electronics and white goods together with related products and services, and pioneered the concept of the out-of-town discount warehouse in the UK.

The company was sold for £2 by Kesa Electricals to private equity firm OpCapita in 2011, subsequently entering administration on 2 November 2012 after OpCapita failed to turn around the business.

All Comet stores were closed by 18 December 2012.

Many of the stores have had their signage removed already but this store on the Capitol Retail Park in Preston is still awaiting that fate.
