Today's Picture is of the former Clunes Telegraph Hotel 1863 but now trading as Keebles Country House as a Boutique Accommodation house. Sitting on the Creswick Creek just as you come across the bridge at Clunes, this is your first grand impression of what claims to be, "Victoria's First Gold Town". A number of other well preserved building from the goldrush days of the 1850's - 1860's are also spread around the town and well worth a visit just to step back in time even just for a couple of hours.

No. 095 Project 366 - The Old Macaroni Factory & Roma Hotel Hepburn Springs

spacountry posted a photo:

Today's Picture is The Old Macaroni Factory in Hepburn Springs (Spring Creek) and was built in 1859 and lays claim to being Australia's oldest Italian building. Said to have been the Roma Hotel (1862-1870) whilst the family were setting up their pasta business to cash in on the gold miners at the time, and then as the Savoia Hotel (Spring Creek Hotel) across the road was built, faded this side of the business out.

The following History I have taken from the web site of the Macaroni Factory to share:

The Lucini family arrives in Australia
The Lucini brothers came from Intra on Lake Maggiore high in the Italian Alps close to the Swiss border. They were educated fabric merchants who had fought with Giuseppi Mazzini to free Italy from their invaders and unite her states and monarchies as a republic. They lost their battle, were forced to leave their homeland and came to Australia as political refugees. Pietro arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and Giacomo and his wife Rosa joined him in 1859.

Melbourne to Hepburn Springs
Pietro opened Australia's first macaroni manufacturing business in 1854 in Melbourne. He had tried selling his beautiful fabrics from Europe, but the demand was very small in the then provincial city, whose population was dominated by those in pursuit of gold. With the realisation there were few Italians and lovers of pasta in Melbourne Pietro closed his shop and headed for the goldfields!

Settlement at Spring Creek
Pietro first opened a bakery premises but soon converted to pasta production, due to the growing demands of the many Italians now working in the gold mining area at Spring Creek - later named Hepburn Springs. By the end of 1855 pasta production was well established and he had discovered a lucrative gold mine.

In 1859 his brother Giacamo and his wife arrived from Italy. Major construction across the road on a new factory and living quarters commenced to more comfortably accommodate the expanded family and business.... this was the birth of the Macaroni Factory.

Gold was the obvious attraction to fortune and the Lucini's took advantage of mining well into the 1870s. Pietro also knew the value of mineral water and was among community leaders who convinced the Government to set the area aside as public land. Pietro gathered about him other patriots who had settled in the area. They met at the 'Factory' and established the Hepburn Democratic Club.

The Old Macaroni Factory Today
Guided tours of the Macaroni Factory give a rare insight into the fascinating story of the Lucini family told through Giacomo Lucini's unique frescoes that adorn the ceilings and walls. Much restoration has been done to reveal these colourful frescoes that are Australia's oldest and preserve the family's history. They reflect complicated political statements and lives and scenes of their Italian homeland at beautiful Lake Maggiore

No. 060 \ Project 366 - Old Hepburn Hotel

Today's photo is of the Old Hepburn Hotel, over the years also called Bings/Bakers, Johnsey's and now Dooley's all after legend Owners/Publicans. Still offering one of the best real country Pub meals going around and plenty of live music and other entertainment at weekends. Of course the beer is always cold with a cider on tap as well.

Many a late night I have spent at this great pub, playing darts, socialising or back in my DJ Days where I had a standing order of until I stop being a DJ, I was booked every New Years Eve and it wasn't open for discussion.

Sadly today when I took this picture, I noticed that it's up for sale with the lease or freehold. I hope it's not the end of an era where its not a local running it anymore. If it is another local it's history and character could be carried forward into a new chapter - fingers crossed.

Like most things, over the years certain icons have started to disappear around the district and not always for the better. One day you look and it's there and the next gone for development, and another landmark is slowly disappearing but I'm happy to say it's not going anywhere, just slowly transforming into a building of Ivy.

The Farmers Arm Hotel is on the intersection of the Midland Hwy and East Street in Daylesford and although still a local drinking hole during the week, it's meals from the kitchen are not your regular pub meals but sit high on the list of restaurant to eat at in the district.

Dating back to 1857 I have a feeling it will be around for a few years to come

Today's Picture was on the way home after being out for dinner of the Royal Hotel Complex on the corner of Vincent & Albert St's Daylesford. Dated 1916, it has always been a very impressive building as you enter the main street and at it's best of a night time and during winter when the trees have lost their leaves and you are able to view the entire building.

Thanks to Les again, some history as below.

Originally the Freemasons which burnt down in 1861 and incidentally was the reason for the formation of the Fire Brigade. Was rebuilt as one storey hotel by JC Rainer a theatrical entrepreneur who had a music hall at the back. Rebuilt in 1916 in its present incarnation.

Today's Picture is of Frangos & Frangos but has a lot of history within it's walls from years gone by. The very Corner section with the verandah that was replicated a few years ago was where the State\National Bank was back in the 1860's. In the 1880's the section that was the Bank became the Belvedere House and the area closest to the Town Hall was a seperate Hotel known as the Town Hall Hotel. Sometime in the early 1900's a great fire ripped through destroying a major section of the then Belvdere House and was later re-built incorporating the Town Hall Hotel and became the Belverdere Hotel. Still opertating as a family Hotel up until the early 1990's, the locals often referred to it as the Swinging Arms Hotel after a bit of a reputation for the odd fight or two most weekends.

Now known as Frangos & Frangos after the owner who has owned the building since the 1970's closed it as a hotel to redevelop it into well repected eating houses at either end of the building and finally a bar has now been reopened in the middle where the word hotel appears on the tin canopy over the entrances. A number of seating arrangements have been place permanently on the footpath outside the building and is still a heated debate amongst locals as to their outcome.

The Daylesford Hotel in it's present form can be dated back to 1910, but prior to that records show a hotel on the site since 1859 as the Commercial. The Hotel has only in recent years become the Daylesford Hotel as I can remember it still being the Commercial Hotel not that long ago. My memory that is etched into my mind is being at the Hotel on a Saturday Night in January 1983 for a family birthday dinner for our cousin and the terrible news filtering through that we had lost 2 men of the town in a bushfire at Greendale whilst fighting the fire as Forrest Commision employees. It's true when you hear them say, where were you when such & such happened and how often you can recall everything about that day as if it happened yesterday.

No. 125 \ Project 366 - Old Jamieson Hotel/Raglan Flats Daylesford

spacountry posted a photo:

Today's picture is of what I have always heard called the Raglan Flats, but prior to that it was the site of the Jamieson Hotel. For the last decade or two, it had only housed a secondhand shop in the very front part where the black tiles are, it was more like a period clothes shop with a few odds and sods. A few years a go, I purchased a Melbourne Bitter wall mount logo which the lady told me was her fathers who use to be the owner of the building. The Jamieson Hotel dates back to the days of the gold rush and was in operation from 1859 to 1870 and was also the Howe Street depot of Cobb & Co.

Up until the last 18 months when the building was sold, the North East Side had a Melbourne Bitter faded painted sign on it but was well hidden by the overgrown garden etc and you just couldnt get a picture of it. Now unfortunately due to its total renovation and makeover, that side wall has all but gone, but on the up side, a number of businesses are now operating from the site and I must say it does light up a rather dark corner of town at night now.

Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat is a grand 1930’s guest house that has been transformed into a deluxe retreat with stylish and elegant reception areas, leafy gardens and stunning courtyards.

In my time I can remember sitting in the bar when it was just known as The Springs Hotel and was completely white in colour. Many wedding were also held there as back then, it was one of the few places that could cater and seat 100 plus guests and I might add, I was the house DJ at the time.

No. 031 \ Project 366 - Former Leggats Hotel Daylesford

spacountry posted a photo:

This magestic old building I believe to be known as the former Leggats Hotel and was a stop for the Cobb & Co Coach in it's day bringing both people and the mail to town. Situated in Leggat Street near Lake Daylesford, back in the day it would have been on the main road in and out of Daylesford if you were heading to Ballarat. (Old Ballarat Road)

In January 1854, the first Cobb & Co coach left the Criterion Hotel in Melbourne, bound for Forest Creek, a gold digging site close to Bendigo.

In my childhood I can remember going to this building, down the stairs at the front to the basement which for a short while was a wax museum of sorts. An old black hearse was also parked out the front just to spook us kids out i think.

In the hands of one owner for many years as a residence, it now has new owners and the top section looks to have had a face lift already.

Us locals hoped it would always remain as our own little RAY of sunshine, but sometimes money talks.
