The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is the biggest of the lynxes. It is native to European and Siberian forests. While its conservation status has been classified as "Least Concern", populations of Eurasian lynx have been reduced or extirpated from western Europe, where it is now being reintroduced.

During the summer, the Eurasian lynx has a relatively short, reddish or brown coat, which is replaced by a much thicker silver-grey to greyish-brown coat during winter. The lynx hunts by stalking and jumping its prey, helped by the rugged forested country it resides in. The cat will generally feed on small prey, such as, hares, rabbits, foxes, etc., and switch to larger prey only when food becomes scarce.

The Great Grey Owl or Lapland Owl, Strix nebulosa, is a very large owl, distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. In some areas it is also called the Great Gray Ghost, Phantom of the north, Cinereous Owl, Spectral Owl, Lapland Owl, Spruce Owl, Bearded Owl and Sooty Owl.

Adults have a big, rounded head with a grey face and yellow eyes with darker circles around them. The underparts are light with dark streaks; the upper parts are grey with pale bars. This owl does not have ear tufts and has the largest facial disc of any raptor.

In terms of length, the Great Grey Owl is believed to exceed the Eurasian Eagle-owl and the Blakiston's Fish Owl as the world's largest owl. The Great Grey is outweighed by those two species as well as several others, including most of the Bubo genus. Much of its size is deceptive, since this species' fluffy feathers, long tail and large head obscure a body lighter than that of most other large owls. The length ranges from 61 to 84 cm (24 to 33 in), averaging 72 cm (27 in) for females and 67 cm (26 in) for males. The wingspan can exceed 152 cm (60 in), but averages 142 cm (56 in) for females and 140 cm (55 in) for males. The adult weight ranges from 700 to 1800 grams (1½ to 4 lb), averaging 1290 grams (2 lb 14 oz) for females and 1000 g (2 lb 3 oz) for males. The males are usually smaller than females, as in most owl species.

The Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is a woodland antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. Despite occupying such widespread territory, they are sparsely populated in most areas, due to a declining habitat, deforestation and hunting.

You really have to be there to fully experience the beauty of a winter sunset in Iceland... The fog, reflections and distant houses on a small pier, in front of one of the countries mountain ranges in the far distance.

One of the few remaining churches in the old centre of Reykjavik. I like the simple lines of the building and the clean walls. I wonder how long these would have stayed graffiti-free in The Netherlands...

To stand here at the edge of the amazing Gullfoss waterfalls is a great experience. It makes me want to return in summertime, when it isn't -18 degrees Celsius :-)

Hey everyone, after moving into my new house I didn't have much time for photography, but lately as the weather got better and I got some more free time, I went out to shoot again.
You can expect a bunch of new shots in the coming days when I find time to sort and select them.

I am participating in a competition with this shot, so let's hope it is good enough :-)

Update: This photograph was selected by Scott Bourne for critique on his website. I got some quite good comments there; thanks Scott and the others!

Some move slow, to a point when time seems to stand still. Others can't even be stopped by the strongest frost.
Both end up at the same place, eventually.

(It was -20 degrees Celsius / -4 degrees Fahrenheit here a few days ago)

Winter is here, the days are short and the snow is starting to fall. Soon it will be Christmas and festivities will start again all over the world.
This was shot in the Belgian Ardennes, in the neighbourhood of Malmedy. Many people will know Malmedy from the famous battles during World War II.

When I got home and saw this shot, I had to think of the movie Sin City. Those who have seen the movie maybe see the link. I am experimenting with black and white conversion, and this is one of the more creative attempts.
