The Dome at the Queen Mary

This geodesic dome once housed Howard Hughes' famous "Spruce Goose," a WWII-era transport plane made largely of wood and composites. The dome is now used by Carnival Cruise Lines as a ship terminal.

This is a series of cut-outs in the ceiling of a local carwash. About a year or so ago the whole place was repainted in L.A. Lakers colors of purple and yellow. I saw these sharp shadows while waiting at a traffic signal and snapped this through my car window.

This is a close crop of the red neon lights encircling the Loehmann's store in Burbank, formerly a Virgin Music store. The daytime appearance of this is not nearly as wild as this image, as you can seen in the Google street view.

Running With Sharp Objects

This is part of an escalator lobby in the underground shops at 505 South Flower Street (formerly known as Arco Plaza) in downtown L.A. The walls are covered on both sides in mirrored panels alternating with blue glazed tiles on one wall and green on the other. From some angles the reflections run off into infinity. I boosted the saturation a little bit here but the tiles are vividly colored in real life. The stainless steel of the escalators, which are seen here reflected in the mirrors, are lit by some sort of incandescent lighting because they appear orange-gold to the camera. Those are normally silver, of course, and it's only the lighting that creates the gold tone.

Although much of the underground area was remodeled a few years ago, this portion dates back to at least the 80s and maybe earlier. The two towers were built in 1972.

This is part of the upper level of the Gallagher Building in Glendale. From what I could unearth, the company provides insurance and "risk management," whatever that means. It sure is an interesting building though. The designer really likes squares, cubes and straight lines.

This is a slightly different view of the Hollywood & Highland Metro station from one previously posted. This one focuses more on the concentric rings that decorate the station. (I don't think these have any structural purpose.) They do reinforce the strong sense of perspective, however.

The rings remind of the giant magnets in synchrotrons. (I know, I'm a total science nerd.)

This is a set of stairs outside of the iconic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. I don't know if ancient Egyptian stairs looked like this. More likely, this may be what Hollywood promoters thought ancient Egyptian stairs looked like in 1922 when the place was built.

Yellow Cafe

This is the concession stand at downtown L.A.'s Pershing Square. It was part of the remodeling of the square-block-sized park in 1994 and it was supposed to be a place for a small cafe to serve people in the park. It sits empty today.

In 2010 the city's Recreation and Parks department asked for bids to use the concession. There were a few strings attached, however. Entrepreneurs were required to invest at least a quarter-million dollars to expand and renovate the cafe space; operate from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; close up shop on as many as 14 days a year for special events; and as rent, they were required to fork over a minimum of $12,000 per year or 4% of gross annual receipts.

The city didn't receive a single bid. What a surprise!

Oh ... and I guess any concessionaire has to like yellow. A lot!

Art Deco-Inspired Ceiling Light

These light panels were part of a restoration of the entryway for the James Oviatt Building in downtown Los Angeles, which became one of the most extravagant examples of art deco design in the city in 1928.

I would love to come back at night and photograph the entire entryway lighted up by the art deco fixtures.

This futuristic Metro station is the stop at Hollywood and Highland. This place is Tourist Central. The Kodak Theater is just outside and down the street are Grauman's Chinese and El Capitan Theaters.

The architect of this building, Thom Mayne, won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2005.
