I couldn't decide what to post for Dragonfly Thursday so chose a Setwing after seeing Lacey's. They had a very short season here this year with few around the yard. This guy loved to pose for shots.

I saw another Yellow-bellied sapsucker and Rose-breasted grosbeak yesterday, along with Tennessee & Magnolia warblers. The female hummers weren't at the feeder so they must have hit the road to the Gulf ... but we did spot one flying through the yard last evening.

Obelisking in the heat at the nature center. Passion flowers were blooming but not much was flying other than bumblebees. Very few butterflies ...

The few setwings I've seen this year have been hiding in the shade in the woods. This female was also in the woods - but at an opening where a small ray of sunshine filtered through. Clouds were moving over and I kept losing what light there was! But got several decent shots. Btw this was not run through the noise filter - the pale highlights were naturally in this shot and the filter just aggravated them. Setwings are "fairly common to uncommon" here above the fall line per Giff, and "uncommon" below the fall line. So they are one of the least common dragonflies that we get in the yard. Unlike pennants, setwings like to pose on sturdy sticks & weeds.

I keep getting asked how to get dragonflies to do this. Just pick a blazing HOT SUNNY day in July or August. Go find a Blue Dasher or Swift Setwing (lots of other dragons do it too). In the middle of the HOT afternoon. If you're not sweating and getting eaten by bugs - the dragonflies won't be obelisking :-) If your dragonflies won't do this, come on down and I'll introduce you to our friendly Georgia variety - Vicki
