Scorpion in defensive position. Scorpions are predatory arthropod animals of the order Scorpiones within the class Arachnida. They have eight legs and are easily recognized by the pair of grasping claws and the narrow, segmented tail, often carried in a characteristic forward curve over the back, ending with a venomous stinger. Specimens in a demonstration collection are examined along with field observations in daylight and after dark in both desert and riparian habitats. About 100 scientific insect collection 5-gallon buckets, buried in the desert, were uncovered for one evening to see what specimens we might encounter. We found hundreds of insects, including many scorpions, and this baby field squirrel. We also hunted for scorpions at night using ultraviolet light to take advantage of their fluorescence.
