Active Assignment Weekly August 9–16: Through a Window

A rather simple concept that can seem easier than it is. For this assignment take a photo of something through a window or window opening. The window or opening must be readily recognized in the photo. You can shoot from the outside in or the inside out.

Dare: Have a reflection in the window glass be a component of the image.

No restriction this time as I can't think of any...

Simply taken outside this cafe window. It was wet and miserable outside, where I was, so I envied them all in there, having coffees!

Trying to get the unease factor.

I came to realise that I just couldn't (and in the end couldn't be bothered to) get the soft shadow around a person, as Kander did in his Obama staff series of portraits. In the end, I went for the slight apprehension and unease the portraits convey.
Here I wanted to make it uncomfortable for the sitter and viewer both. I framed for a right of frame position, the strong shadow from a spotlight and the geometric background. I softened the whole thing up with a tint. Taken with one spotlight and highish ISO.

Emulation project pro80 in the style of "rose and driftwood" by Ansel Adams

Influenced by Ansel Adams and: "Rose and Driftwood"
PRO80 set by primer (for Photography Critique Assignment group)
Mission:
To emulate the style of Ansel Adams, American (1902-1984).

Ansel Adams is arguably one of the most famous and influential photographers on the 20th century best known for his stark black and white photographs of Yosemite National Park. He was one of the first major proponents of "straight photography" which rejected imitating other styles in art in photography and championed the "beauty of tone and detail that is found only in photographs" [source].

While Adams is best known for his landscape photographs, he was also a commercial photographer. He approached both styles in the same way and according to Adams: "I don't have any idea that commercialism or professionalism is on one side of the fence and the creative side is on the other. They're both interlocked."

Your assignment is to create a photograph in the Ansel Adams style utilizing his "straight photography" approach.

WIT
A visit to the woodpile and I found this wonderful twisted piece of wood, part bark, part contorted wood grain. A bloom from one of my begonia plants. The bloom was bright orange.
I did a conversion to b&w, boosting the hot end of the spectrum, the reds and oranges. This was to enhance the bloom and the red parts of the wood.
I then dodged (lightened) the highlights on the wood grain to increase the contrast and balance out the lighter parts of the bark. I darkened the white parts of bark (not that they were blown, but to reduce their impact a little). Slight sharpening and slight contrast enhancement and that was it.
I1. which photo(s) inspired you
To be honest all his photos inspired me! This one hopefully gives the feel of the Rose and Driftwood image by him. Rose and Driftwood
2. what you like and/or don't like about Ansel Adams' style
I like the clarity and in-your-face sharpness of his landscapes BUT by the same token, I dislike the sameness (or rather, predictability) of them. I do love Turner's paintings and also impressionism in Art, so a little mystery is a good thing as far as I am concerned.
3. your thoughts and/or thought process behind your assignment submission
My thoughts on this one were the fact that I knew I would get good contrast and tonal range from the bloom and the wood. The twisted grain and bark have great textural qualities, so I thought they would have equal if not more importance than the bloom itself. I wanted the bloom's softness and the hardness of the wood to contrast each other, but at the same time, my placement of the bloom, I hope, makes it a part of the wood and the curves ripple throughout the image.
4. how your photo reflects elements of Adams' style
The wood is sharp, well defined and has interest. The tonal range is pretty well complete, from black to white. The rose is a counterpoint to the wood, showing a different texture and softness.
5. what you gained as a photographer from studying Ansel Adams' work
I guess I first came across Ansel Adams' work 40 years ago. I gained an appreciation of how a majestic landscape can look absolutely awesome in print.

I used my old Nikon D50 for this one.
