After Muang Tam, I got back to Nang Rong. On the way back, I stopped and took a look at the view platform beside the hill path. It was remarkable. And I could not forget this trip. Very soon, I took the bus back to Korat.

This carving is notable for its naivete of execution. Shiva, riding the bull Nandi, is holding a trident, with Uma (looking rather like a sock-puppet) draped in his lap. Other humans and animals fill the scene. Below, garlands issue from the mouths of animals whose rear legs are held by a kala.

The ponds are separated by broad causeways that lead from the gates in the outer wall to the gates to the gallery enclosing the inner sanctuary.

The five towers of Muang Tam are, unusually, arranged in two rows (three in front, two in back) rather than the expected quincunx. Four of the towers are partially restored, as seen here, and the culmination of their distinctly terraced levels can easily be visualized. The central front tower, which originally fitted into the space between the right and left front towers, has lost too many bricks to be restored. It would have been the main sanctuary of the temple.

Within the outer wall, there are large "L"-shaped ponds in each corner of the compound. These ponds symbolize the "Goddess of the Water" who protects the temple.

People only returned to the area in the early twentieth century, and the name "Muang Tam" dates from that time. Muang Tam means "Lower City", and is in reference to the 'higher' city on Phnom Rung. Nobody seems to know what the Khmer originally called the temple.
