Stephen had planned for us to do a bit of scrambling up Sour Milk Gill at the start of our planned route via Base Brown to Green, then Great, Gable.
However Plan B had to be implemented as there was far too much water around to do any scrambling, and the rocks that were not underwater were incredibly slippery from a mix of spray and drizzle. So we made our way up to Base Brown via the path alongside the Gill, which in itself had a couple of awkward places in the wet.
The cloud level didn't rise as predicted so we abandoned the Gables altogether and made our way back down the hillside to Styhead, then over to Allen Crags and Glaramara as the cloud base lifted a little (it never did clear the top of Great Gable until very late in the day).

The upmarket version of watching paint dry?

The glacier in the centre of the shot is the Grenzgletscher which flows between the Dufourspitze (or Monte Rosa) hidden in cloud at the left of the shot and Liskamm also hidden above the 3 'watchers' (Liz on the right, and two of our best friends who by chance were on holiday in the Zermatt area the same week as we were!).

The Grenzgletscher joins the Gornergletscher (the 2nd largest alpine glacier system after the Aletschgletscher) below the outcrops on the left of the shot.

HDR from single shot (since I overdid the overexposure in trying to compensate for all the whites and pale greys).

Although it's not the highest mountain in the Zermatt area, the Matterhorn seems to be a major focal point in every view. It compels your attention and the camera lens seems to be drawn to it almost magnetically (it would be interesting to work out what proportion of my shots include it!!).

This is a 3-shot panorama (taken in vertical format), walking back from Fluhalp (the obligatory Kaffee and Kuchen stop!) to Sunnegga Paradise to catch the funicular railway back down to Zermatt.

During our week's stay in Zermatt, the weather improved daily so from mid-week on it was pretty much wall-to-wall sun, we had found our summer at last!!

So much better on black....

Strokkur still heading skywards.
Until I was back in the UK and was able to see the shots on the my screen, I didn't notice that the jet contained small 'bomblets' of water at its tip (crop in comments below).

The noise at the moment of eruption was very loud if you were standing close by (you could get within a few feet) - enough to make me 'start' the first time - and enough to send small youngsters scurrying behind their parents' legs or make them cry.
Rather worryingly at one point, my daughter and I (and a few other people too) found ourselves on the 'inside' of the roped off 'safe' area - not the best place to be when the earth's crust is so thin and fissured!
This particular farm just outside Burton Latimer (the home of Weetabix) has 10 turbines, each 100m high when the blade is vertical (64m to the 'hub').
I think that they are rather elegant (and kind of eerie on a foggy morning!), though size & siting need careful thought - but as a means of producing energy efficiently they are a dead loss.

It was such a pity that I had to go to work last Thursday because we had a misty morning, a rare occurrence thus far this autumn. I did take my (smaller) Panasonic with me and took a few shots en route including this one which looks over the graveyard of Odell Church from the entrance to Odell Castle. The ornament was serendipitous, I just liked the scene framed by the lovely beech tree and the retaining wall.

Only had a few minutes to leg it down to the Country Park to see if there was any residual mist. I had to be back home by 7.50am, and on a Saturday morning at that, since we had a builder coming to start work on getting rid of some damp. Old houses have character and plenty more besides!
The sun was just making its way above a layer of low cloud the warmth from which I guess had limited the amount of mist - but there was just enough to make my quick trip worthwhile. Better on black as ever.....
The Matterhorn reflecting in the Stellisee (where there was also a micro version, crop in comments below!). We had planned to do the 5-Seenweg (5 Lakes Trail), but on reaching Stellisee we were tempted to carry on up to Fluhalp where we could sample Kaffee and Kuchen. It was a good choice!

Still masses of Iceland photos not uploaded!

Our final day on the island before flying out early the next morning, was a very full one, this being the first of a number of sights we raced around.

I fell in love with this place - as I was pretty sure that I would do from seeing some wonderful shots of it here on Flickr. I could have gladly spent hours wandering and snapping since the weather was fabulous, if still windy. But there were many kilometres and other sights to cover, and I would have had a very bored daughter into the bargain!

So we spent just over half an hour here gawping at the beauty of the place (39 shots to prove it!).

Lightroom and Fullscreen are recommended (as always!).

The Námafjall area was even more fascinating than that around Viti (previous upload). We spent a magical hour walking around the plain & the hillside containing bubbling & smoking mud-pools, amazing coloured soils and incredibly smelly steam vents, including a couple where you couldn't avoid walking through the noxious emission! All good fun. Námafjall was definitely a highlight amongst highlights.

Dettifoss is reputed to be Europe's largest waterfall in terms of volume of water plunging down its 45m (150ft) height.
Unfortunately for us our visit was on a pretty minging day. The car thermometer read 1C as we rattled our way in a mixture of rain and sleet up the corrugated gravel road to the falls. But it was a most worthwhile journey, the falls were dramatic to say the least (though I think that the guidebook's "you can hear them for miles" was a touch of hyperbole!).

Really needs Fullscreen on black!
