We parked the vehicles at Reub's ranch and walked up to the cave each day. Luther Cressman is to the left and Steve Bedwell to the right.

Photo taken in late summer, 1966. Gardner came with his ranch manager and a couple of other people. See the on-photo notes for identifications. This was during the 1966 excavations of Fort Rock Cave by archaeologists from the University of Oregon directed by Luther Cressman. Gardner, the author of the Perry Mason mysteries and many more books, had a long-term interest in archaeology and was a friend of Rueb Long, the author and rancher who owned the cave.

Photo taken in late summer,1966, during excavations at Fort Rock Cave, Oregon (USA), undertaken by archaeologists from the University of Oregon. The cave was on Reub Long's land; he was a very well-known Oregon rancher and storyteller and the co-author of "The Oregon Desert." Luther Cressman directed this project and first excavated the site in 1938; he is generally considered to be the "father of Oregon archaeology."

Reuben (Rueb) Long was the co-author of a book, The Oregon Desert. He told me later that this picture I took of him was his favorite and that he decided to call it "One horny old goat contemplating another."
