I went on a photowalk in the not-so-nice-anymore places of Aachen. Theres quite a lot to be had and some fence-climbing would have gotten me even more, but the retard who threatend me to call the police because I took a photo of his stupid truck (it wasn't even visible in the frame, let alone any license plates or badges) caused enough excitement for the day.

I went out for the sole porpuse of convicing myself that the 18-55 kit lense is not crap (obviously for wide angle usage only). And well, the clouds were pretty damn awesome.

See, I was looking up possible replacements for that lense over at photozone, who put out scientific lab tests for various lenses. And what can I say, its sort of depressing- or not, depending on how you look at it. The short answer is: spending 1500 euros for one of the best avalible Nikkor-lenses (like the 14-24) ony yields marginally better results UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MATTER FOR ***ME**** while shooting landscape (f8, 18mm) in terms of sharpness. I get a tiny bit less vignetting, but thats a) not noticeable and b) I vignette the crap out of most of my pictures anyway. I get less distortion, but if If I ever were to put that glass on a FX, the distortion rockets back to the usual ~3%. Also its removeable anyway. Overall I would end up at roughly the same IQ with the 1500€ glass, and thats not even taking into consideration that pictures are beeing displayed as tiny version in most cases anyway. So yeah, the 18-55 kit lense is a very good lense for wide angle and its roughly as good as its going to get on a DX body, considering the way *I* use it. I just don't need f2,8 for landscape, like, ever.

And yet I still don't like that bloody thing. I hate the crunchy squeaky china plastic. I hate the AF/MF and VR switch that get knocked out of position even when you look at them. I hate the fact that my cellphone or my key chain put more weight on the scale than this lense. And lets not speak of how you have to manual focus with it. Its a very unattractive piece of hardware, and I like attractive hardware. For me it's part of the entire fun.

So someday I'll spend a small fortune on a new lense just for its improved haptics? Meh.

Press L, the difference is pretty huge. Also, Lightroom 4 is finally working as of yesterday (4.1). Yay.

postscript: I have to backpadel on this one. Lightroom 4.1 is *still* lagging like seven hells in development. Sigh.

This is the result of a hefty crop (about 1/7th of the frame). It's nice to get a halfway decent picture out of something you'd otherwise have thrown away, but as you can see, it comes at the cost of a lot nasty pixelation and unsharp-ness. I'm sorry for not having taken the shot this way in the first place.

I just realized that theres no hint of scale in this picture. This caldron is about 4,5m tall.

I love when unplaned shots that didnt involve me lugging 5kgs of equipment through town turn out in such a way that I can like them.

Someday I'll get the high-quality shot that this building deserves, but this should serve for now.

Ok, the building pictured here is actually the university hospital of aachen, but its hard not so see fortress of evil in that architecture. So I went a little overboard and displayed it that way.
