On Tuesday, May 7, 2013 U.S. State Department visitors from Afghanistan and India met with American Red Cross South Jersey Region Representatives in Toms River, NJ. At the request of the State Department, Red Cross provided a successful client case story at the Harris residence. Harold and Beville Harris are Superstorm Sandy survivors who had lost all the contents of their home from two feet of storm surge flooding and mold. Six months after Sandy the Harris couple are well on their way to returning to living in their home again with the assistance of American Red Cross and other organizations assisting in recovery across NJ.

Mr. Vanlalruata, visiting from India, Laura Steinmetz, Red Cross SJ Region Spokesperson, Ellen Korpar, Red Cross Sandy Client Case Worker, Harold and Beville Harris, home owners, Mr. Mohammad Fahim, visiting from Afghanistan, w/ U.S. State Department Interpreter, Shahnaz Masumi.

Karen Young and her family have lived along the Wabash River in West Union, Illinois for more than 30 years. When a Red Cross Disaster Assessment Team met with Karen at her home on Mechanic Street in West Union (also called Old York) she explained that they have suffered through 4 or 5 floods, but this was by far the worst. Their primary home sustained 10 feet of water in the basement and came within an inch of flooding their living area.

Red Cross is providing clean up kits for the Young’s and others who are now working to salvage what they can and move towards recovery after these devastating floodwaters.
