Images of life in Belarus, 2000-2003

Memorial at Kuropaty for victims of Stalin-era purges. Bodies were first discovered in the former killing fields in 1988. Evidence indicates perhaps 250,000 people (from Belarus, Poland and the Baltic states) were killed by the Soviets here between 1937 and 1941. The yearly memorial vigil has become a rallying point for the political opposition movement in Belarus.
